.asx vs .wax files

Postby Fulvio » Tue 19 Jul, 2005 3:43 pm

I visited a website which has excellent music, and is set to open WMP and play .wax files, http://ktbg.fm/broadcast-broadband2.wax . Using any Netscape, Mozilla, etc program, and clicking on the same link, I get code: <ASX version="3.0">

Is the problem with the way it is coded, so that the gecko browsers see a link to an .asx file, or is this something else.
The website has also a link for Netscape users, and it will work, with an embedded link, as long as that page is not disturbed.
Is the problem in the ambiguous .file extention, or something else.
I have no problem with http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/kut/ppr/kut.asx
which opens WMP.
Any idea, so that I can pass it on?

Fulvio, do you have Windows Media Player 9 or 10 installed and correct settings for plugins?

Are you able to simply copy and paste the .wax URL to your Windows Media Player?

Antony,
I don't think you understand the problem. I can play the music in a variety of ways, either from the downloaded file, or as an embedded file.
The FM station does not have a player of its own, and the broadband as well as dialup link will open WMP, and play there. Somehow, they have what used to have an .asx description for a .wax file. IE can tell, but the gecko programs can't. I remember that someone from the station came to this newsgroup or another, and his solution, apparently, was to embed a file for Netscape users, because he had no solution for a direct opening, like the other link which I gave. Somehow, over time, the file became .wax, but it does not matter.
I have all the needed plugins, but a number of site will not allow playing of their embedded files. This one does, but does not allow opening of WMP.
Yes, I have plugins, and the required Registry keys.
I have contacted the website, and someone in the know, is going to work on this.

Okay, I got it now, Gecko based browsers do not handle file correctly. Is that only in certain sites, for all websites?

If that's only in certain websites, it could be due to incorrect setting of MIME type (at web servers).

I experience the same problem with Safari as well.

Most likely it's the server's MIME type setting.
