"Crunching" anyone? Public Distributed Computing?

Postby richard mitnick » Thu 18 Mar, 2010 1:58 pm

I have been involved in Public Distributed Computing, "crunching", now for a number of years. Once I got into it, I found it to be the most satisfying thing I had ever done with my computer(s).

I am "crunching" for various scientific projects at august institutions and universities around the world that use BOINC software from http://boinc.berkeley.edu. I am crunching with 2 Core 2 Duo machines, 1 i7 machine, an Atom N270 netbook, and, now, soon an i5 machine.

I know that Antony crunches for folding at home (FAH) another totally worthwhile project.

I think that John up in Pulaski, NY is doing some work in this area in his school. This is admirable.

So, there are several of us acknowledged "crunchers". We would be happy to answer questions or otherwise try to help anyone who is interested in this work.

We would love to hear from you.

I'm no longer in Pulaski. But I am working on it with a group of friend here in Red Creek.

Currently I'm crunching with 1 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo Machine, 1 2.66Ghz Pentium 4, 1. 3.0Ghz Pentium four and a very old 497Mhz Pentium Three.

Currently I'm working on an AMD Athlon II x4 Machine, which I hope will be pretty good for crunching as well.

We also have 20 2.5Ghz Pentium D's crunching at school.

Richard, how's the i7 working out?

John-

So, you moved? Where is Red Creek.

Yes, the i7 is doing a great job, after way to much work, but with great help from some of the CA's at BOINC Message Boards and WCG forums.

Last November, we could not keep it lit with work.

What worked was to change the Additional work in BOINC Manager\Local Preferences to 2.0, which means load up two extra days of work.

The i5 will have the same problem qualitatively, but not quantitatively. I will probably start it off with 1 day additional. But after the last experience I know enough to handle it on my own.

Red Creek is about 45 minutes north west of Oswego, which is about 45 minutes west? from Pulaski. It's a nice small little town...with absolutely nothing to do. We have a library and a post office.

I also forgot to mention that at the library where I work on weekends, we're going to start all of the Core 2 Duo machines with crunching.

John, the news about the machines at the library is really terrific.

Thanks Richard.

We're still waiting for approval from the big people in charge, but hopefully it'll go over well.
