/i386 folders and disk space

Postby Don_HH2K » Sat 02 Apr, 2005 10:52 pm

There are two /i386 folders on my hard drive: one in /i386 and another in /WINDOWS/ServicePackFiles/i386. I know that the one under ServicePackFiles has to be left alone (since that's SP2), but does anybody know if I can safely delete the /i386 folder in the root of the drive without killing something so that I can free up half a gig of space, since I believe that one's SP1 or RTM?

Is this a machine from an OEM like Gateway or Dell? If so, those files should be left alone. Windows uses them in situations in which you'd normally need a Windows CD (running sfc /scannow for example).

This is an HP-branded laptop. I was provided with what's supposedly a 'fully functional' CD of Windows XP that happens to be locked to this machine's BIOS. AFAIK, the /i386 folder in the root drive is an exact copy of the /i386 folder on the XP CD. But, those are SP1 files, while the /i386 folder in /WINDOWS/ServicePackFiles contains the same files, except they're for SP2.

What I think I might do is burn the /i386 folder to a CD, delete it from the drive, and see what happens. If it crashes out, then I'll just put it back. Otherwise, I'll save myself some 600MB of disk space.
