(Not Responding)

Postby ray5450 » Mon 02 Jan, 2012 11:05 pm

Ever since I updated a few weeks ago to FF 8 (and above), I am constantly getting freeze-ups "(Not Responding)", sometimes as often as every minute. It has happened twice while I am typing this message. One time while it was in the "(Not Responding)" state, I was observing my Windows resources: CPU was 1%, memory was less than half used. As far as add-ons, I have had the same few for a long time without any problems, and in fact, since upgrading, I had to drop a couple because they were not compatible. Why is this happening?

Thanks.

I can be of no help, because you have a very extreme problem. Nothing even remotely close to what you describe, ever happened to me. And, I have an old computer, where all sort of things could go wrong. I am not sure what is your OS, but it is, certainly, newer than mine.
I don't know if add-ons could cause problems like yours. You can, always, try to start in Safe Mode. The fact that some add-ons are incompatible is irrelevant.
I have kept a copy of Firefox 3.6.x, with its own profile, just to check for possible weirdnesses, but the behavior of 3.6.25 and 9.0.1 is alike.

I don't know if it will help any to know, but...
1. My. Windows is Vista.
2. The reason I mentioned incompatible add-ons was only to show that I have less add-ons than I did before, which are not many.
3. I did go through anyway and disabled all add-ons, and there was no change.
4. Next, I started disabling plugins and found that when Adobe Flash was disabled, I did not experience it, but since I was using it, I only tried it without for 5-10 minutes. If that is it, is there another way to watch streaming flash video? I don't think I could do without this, and besides that, I have always had it before with no problem.

Thanks.

I realize that, for reasons I don't understand, some of my posts here have been difficult, if not unsolvable, issues, but I appreciate any responses just the same. Thanks.

So that it may help someone else, I ended up wiping my hard drive and starting over, which did solve the freezing-up-problem. Shortly after, however, I had a different problem, which I made a separate post since it was a separate issue--see "Severe Video Stalling" post. (I consider "stalling" different than "freezing". "Freezing" to me, is when the whole system briefly will not respond. "Stalling" to me, is when only the video stops.)
