[Resolved] wireless for Win 7 64 bit won't connect

Postby richard mitnick » Wed 14 Jul, 2010 9:28 am

So I have a laptop with Win 7 64 bit. I bought it primarily for travel. I just took it on a trip and tried to connect to two different wireless networks. Both failed to connect to the internet. On one, where an ethernet connection was available, on the wire the computer connected immediately.

When I got home, I tried to connect via wireless to my own network, where my router is a Linksys WRT54GL. My Vista and XP machines connect wireless with this router just fine. I have a Roku box for Netflix and that connects just fine.

Since I have everything everything except the XP machine and the Roku box on ethernet, I had never tried to connect wireless with this laptop. It failed to connect, using all of the security data which I have written down. Of course, on ethernet it connects just fine.

I called Cisco, they had no answer.

Can anyone tell me, is the 64 bit the problem?

Or, can anyone give me a script of the right steps to connect to a wireless network?

Thanks,

Have you tried updating the wireless card's drivers? Most laptop vendors publish updates on their websites, though it's unlikely they'd have shipped it with a driver that just didn't work.

Hey Don-

How are you?

Thanks for the tip, I checked and the card's driver is up to date.

Richard,

Are you able to see the wireless network (you wish to connect) on your Windows 7 machine?

Antony-

Yes, it says it is connected, 54.0 Mbps, enabled, IPv4 Connectivity Internet, IPv6 Connectivity No network access, packets sent currently 2287, received 0. IPv6 does show connected.

My security is WEP, but the system shows WPA-Personal and WEP does not show as an option.

Re: wireless for Win 7 64 bit won't connect (solved)

Postby richard mitnick » Wed 14 Jul, 2010 2:34 pm

We can mark this one solved!! Not the right way but...

Before I bought my Win 7 64 bit i7-920 desktop, I had an XP desktop machine in the "annex" (my long since married son's room). That room had no ethernet. I had the machine in there away from the Digiteria for my wife to do her email etc. I bought a Linksys USB wireless unit, "G" with speedboost. This is an XP device.

But, hey, I had tried everything else. I inserted the thing into a USB port. It installed immediately. The computer did not even ask for the CD, which I do have.

So, I am on SD right now with the ethernet cable lying lifeless on the desk.

Here is the problem: Win 7, at least 64 bit, which is what everyone is getting, will not accept WEP encryption, which, while weak, is still what most people have used. It wants at least WPA-Personal. I have too much other stuff configured to the router to go changing any settings there.

And, that's all she wrote.

You say that it will not accept WEP security? When I was using the Beta and RC I was able to connect to my router just fine with WEP. This may not be an issue with Win 7, but with your card itself.

Hey, John

Yes, it is an issue with the card. And i checked the card, it is supposed to handle WEP. I went to dell, they wanted money to fix their product, or even to get it to connect, because i do not have a software warranty.

No way will I pay them one red cent. I will just use my Linksys USB "G" device, which connects just fine at 54 Mbps.

I have two broadcom cards I'm not using. One's a G and one's an N. Message me if you're interested. The G is a full card, N mini. I upgraded to an Intel N one for use with Linux.

John-
Thanks for your offer, but, except for being pissed at Dell, I am really all set with the Linksys USB drive.

I am thinking about telling Dell I want the card replaced. I have 3 years of in house hardware warranty. I did find that the card should handle WEP. So, if it does not, then the card is defective. They will say it is a software problem, for which I should pay for a fix.

If they would just do the fix, then they would not need to pay to send a tech to my house to replace their card.

But, this is only if I stay pissed off.

Thanks again for the offer.

Richard,

I am only guessing here. Make sure you are not creating a wireless network from your Windows 7 machine instead. (That was a common mistake I usually make when trying to set up Windows machine to wireless network.)

Antony-

Thanks for any suggestions. I am not sure what you mean.

Three separate instances, I turn on the machine, I go to Networking in Control Panel, I look for a network, I find the ones I want and those also which are close by which I do not want, I try to connect, with a security key (my router; my son-in-law's router, the hotel's router, all of which I have the necessary security key). I fail.

On both my router and my son-in-law's, I have connected with both XP and Vista machines with no problem, and, now with the Linksys USB drive also this machine with my router.

Richard,

Have you tried a hard reset on the card? Also open up the bottom of your laptop to see if the antennas are connected the right way?

I know what you mean about dell. I had a failing HDD in my laptop, and because of some test they did it didn't work. But when I sent it in for a mother board replacement, and they tried to re-format it they had to replace it....at the expense of all my data.

I think the next computer I get will either me a Lenovo ThinkPad or a custom built machine.

This problem was resolved. Dell replaced the wireless card, I found the right driver.

Usually you edit the topic on a lot of other threads I visit.

Glad to hear you got it replaced. I hate Dell's customer service, a lot.
