"Send Link" in 7.1 -- No shortcut available

Postby katten41 » Wed 21 Jan, 2004 1:30 am

In 4.7, the right click shortcut menu had a "send page" shortcut. This has disappeared in 7.1. Anyone please: how do I create a shortcut in the right click menu that will duplicate what I was able to do in 4.7? Thanks in advance..

Bryan,

Thanks. Yes, I'm aware of the "Send Link" in the File Menu. Is there another one you are referring to? In any event, how do I make "Send Link" into a right click shortcut?

Thanks again.

Hi,
It says send page instead of send link.
It is the same thing though.

Yes, I know, thanks. But I'm still ignorant about how to make that "Send Link" a shortcut on my right click menu. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have no idea what you have, but I am using right now NS7.1, and if you right click, the menu has , In the middle, I am not listing everything,Bookmark this page, Save Page as, and Send Page. I can't see Send Link.
I did a test, and I got what is customary, i.e., a link is sent, as an attachment as well as to be openable Inline, if you are set up that way.
I do not see any difference, other the order of the lines in 4.8.
I, purposely picked some potential troublemaker sites, and that's the way it is. Please include a link, so that we can find what you see, because I can't.
By the way, NS7.1 is my browser and mail default, but I can use 4.8 the same way.

Fulvio, thanks for your reply.

I would have expected to have what you describe but unfortunately don't. Perhaps it is because I downloaded only the Base version of 7.1. Does that make sense? If so, do you think I should uninstall that and install the full version?

You write:" Please include a link, so that we can find what you see, because I can't." I am not sure what you mean by that. Could you please specify.

Thanks again for your continued help.

Steven,
I will start with the last question. By sending a link, I meant to highlight (all you need to do is to click on the right of the URL, i.e. the http, etc. Then right click, and copy, and finally Paste into the Post a reply box. The link will appear, like the one below for the thread. http://sillydog.org/forum/posting.php?m ... te&p=25232 However, if you get the same behavior at several websites, I would not bother.
I really do not think that sending a link, or sending a page, which turns out to be a link are any different. The only apparent difference could be the appearance of the page content in the body of the e-mail, or not. But, you can control that in Netscapes of any kind from View|Attachment inline.
I hesitate giving you any uninstall suggestion, for such a trivial matter. I do not think that it has anything to do with the Base download ( from the Netscape website?). It could be related to the Profile, which is quite another entity.
Please, let me know if there any other reason for wanting to go through all that.

Fulvio,

Here is the link, if I read your instructions correctly.

http://www.google.com/

It certainly is a puzzlement. You are correct; it is relatively trivial, but I've been using Netscape for many years and in the previous versions the right click menu shortcuts have been wonderful and I'd gotten used to them.

By the way, is there a way to add a shortcut to the right click menu? I have researched that on the web and found no information that would tell me how to do it.

Again, thanks for taking so much time with this.

Steven,

Open Windows Explorer
Click on: View | Folder Options
Click on: File Types Tab
Scroll down to: URL:MailTo Protocol
Click on: Edit Tab
Highlight "open"
Click on: Edit Tab
What shows in the "Application used to perform action" field?

If you are using Netscape 7.1 as your default browser, and mail program, then it will show the path to the netscp.exe file.

Let us know what you find.

Ramona,

Thanks very much for your step by step tutorial.

Here is what was in the "Application used to perform action" field:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETSCAPE\COMMUNICATOR\PROGRAM\NETSCAPE.EXE -h "%1"

I highlighted and copied it exactly.

You should know the following: when I installed the Base version of 7.1 I did not uninstall 4.79. My mail program remains part of 4.79. Is this perhaps causing me difficulties? I know that when I open a link attached in an email message from someone, it opens the 4.79 browser, not the 7.1 browser, even though I have chosen the latter as my default browser.

Sorry to give you such a troublesome problem.

Thanks again for your expert advice.

Steven,

So you are using Messenger 4.79 as your default Mail program?

Take a look in your Registry, at this Registry key. NOTE: we are only looking, and not doing any editing...

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\

Is the below data entered in the "Data" field
"{7BA4C740-9E81-11CF-99D3-00AA004AE837}"

Start | Run
Type: regedit
Then follow the above path

You should definitely have the "Send Page" option in your Conext Menu. Installing the Base version should have no effect, unless the executable file was somehow corrupt.

Let us know about the Registry key.

Ramona,

Here is the report from the Registry.

In the data field for [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\, all it says is: (value not set).

I assume this is not a good thing.

I await your next instruction.

In advance, thanks.

Ramona,

I messed up.

I looked in the previous entry in the Registry.

The correct entry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects is as you said it should be in the data field but in the sub-box called "Send To" and not in ContextMenuHandlers.

I am not sure I described this correctly. In short, your numbers exist, but in the "Send To" box.

Yikes!

Steven,

You did just fine. Rest assured the Registry Key is as it should be, and actually the key for the "Send To", as was obvious. I was curious as to whether or not the CLSID was entered (class identifier).

O.K., the reason you have no "Send Page" in the right click context menu is because there is no Mail & NG in the Base Install. Therefore, no "Send" options. I have never been interested in the Netscape versions with no Mail & NG's, so never paid much attention to the official Netscape Base version. Took me a while to wake up! After installing this Version I can see why you were frustrated in not finding the "Send Page" option in the context menu.

If you click on the File | Send Link, your 4.79 Mail Window should open. This is what you found when you checked the URL:MailTo Protocol, and it shows Netscape Communicator 4.79, as the application to handle MailTo.

Now, what you can do, if you want the "Send Page" in the context menu, is to install the mail.xpi. The file (mail.xpi) is 1921 KB, and the download can be found here: Netscape 7.1 .xpi files. This is the Mail & Newsgroups component for Netscape 7.1. You don't have to use it as your default mail, and can continue to use 4.79, if that is your choice. You will, however, need to create an account, in order to use the "Send Page".

To install:
Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Software Installation
Ensure that "Enable Software Installation" is checked

Next, go to the download site (Netscape 7.1 .xpi files) and click on "mail.xpi"
You will receive a prompt with a warning about accepting the software installation. Go ahead and accept the install. When the software has finished installing you will receive a "Success" prompt.
Close Netscape, and then reopen.
Now right click any page, and your "Send Page" will now be available in the context menu.
