"Upgrading to NS 7.1

Postby humpd » Sat 05 Jul, 2003 8:17 am

I was wondering whether or not the new NS 7.1 will be using the same profiles (located in the Windows\App Data\Mozilla\Profiles folder) that I currently have for NS 7.02 even if I install it in a separate directory. If so, will both browsers "play well together."?

I know that 7.02 is based on Moz1.02, while 7.1 is based on Moz1.4, which are quite differently from each other. I usually create a new profile for something so different. In fact, my drill is to create a new profile, and copy the bookmarks.html which is sitting right outside it, and Export my Address books in the .ldif format, even before installing 7.1.
Each browser will play in its own yard, but do not share a single profile. I have heard of a number of people having problems doing this, which led them to hours of frustration. I wish that Netscape would have a way to lead you to the preparation of a new profile.

As I usually download into a special folder, then install in Programs, isn't it easier to just add after Netscape, 7.1 or whatever it is called. I used to upgrade to a special folder for the 4 series and I would just put Netscape Communicator4.79 after the install.
Then if I remove from Add/Remove, it is quite simple.

Can't one do it that way with Netscape 7.1 ? Just curious as usual...BTW, what is it called in Programs or wherever?
I assume it is in Programs :)

Lorraine,
the default folder is C:/Program Files/Netscape, and you can have a renamed folder called Netscape7.1. I find it more visible to set the directory to C:/Netscape7.1, or whatever. The location should be selected just as the installation begins. That's when you can put your Netscape anywhere you want, even on another drive. Then the Add/remove will know where it is and what you call it. I don't know about renaming after installation. I never tried it.
