status update Sunday October 12, 2003 (Status Update #215)

Mozilla 1.4.1

Mozilla 1.4.1, the latest build from the stable 1.4 branch, has been released. This version fixes around 100 bugs, including Windows installer problems and Windows GDI resource issues. Mozilla 1.4.1 also includes a spellchecker.

Mozilla Thunderbird 0.3

Mozilla Thunderbird 0.3 Release Candidate 3 is now available for Windows and Mac OS X. More information about this test build can be found in Scott MacGregor's post to the MozillaZine Forums. The final version of Thunderbird 0.3 is expected to be released simultaneously with Mozilla 1.5.
---

IMHO 1.4.1 is a major release, in that it fixes two serious bugs:
The resource leak, which was especially experienced by Windows 98 users
The Windows installer issue (GRE), which was especially experienced by Windows XP users
Both of these issues rendering Netscape 7.1 and Mozilla 1.4 to a dead stop.

Looking forward to 1.5 Final!

Do you think it might warrant Netscape (what's left of it) to release a 7.1.1 or a 7.2, fixing the noted issue?

IIRC, there was a bit of speculation recently (probably on the MozillaZine forums) that AOL would
offer a maintenance update for Netscape 7.1, only if any security vulnerabilities were discovered?

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

GDI resources leak is not a security vulnerability, so no update is excepted.

I wish they would snag a couple of the Netscape crew and give us one more Release, but in reality, I think the chances are next to none. I have seen Jay Garcia commenting repeatedly that the only possibility for another Netscape 7 Release would be in the event there was a critical security issue, as also noted by DJGM.

There are workarounds for both the Resource Leak and the Windows Installer, so in effect, not important enough for another Release? I'm not in the Netscape loop, so this is only an uneducated guess...
