Try zipping NS3.04, then extract it on your Win3.1 laptop

Try NS 2.0 or lower then download NS3.04 or 4.08 onto the PC, or just zip the zipped file until it's less than 1.44 mb

When you compress it, make sure the parts you create aren't bigger than 1440 kB.

I believe Netscape hasn't been small enough to fit onto a floppy disk since before version 2.0. I believe the best procedure for getting Netscape onto this computer will be to use a utility like WinZip to further compress the browser's install file and, utilizing options, span it over several disks.

tomm,
Don't listen to Al.
you can't keep zipping. the file size won't get smaller.
 Follow Andrew's suggestion. The way to do is to use split the zipped files (span disc)

Al and Wellander:

The gentleman who posted here wanted to put 3.04 on his laptop using floppies. He does not want it zipped, as 3.04 zipped wouldn't fit a floppy.

Please stop SPAMMING this forum with useless tech postings! Read, them speak.

OK?

:) thank you very much for your assistance. I was able to load 2.0 . Tomorrow I will find out from my ISP wat the dial-up number was . I have not used it in years. I am sure that I will need to supply my username and password when logging on to my ISP. How can this be done with version 2.0 i have not found any such options?
Thanks Again
Tom

Tom,

If you still want 3.04 on your Win 3.1 laptop, do this:

If you have a desktop computer that runs Windows 95 and later go to this website:

http://www.geocities.com/roverjbh99/16bitns3/

This site has the Win 3.1 version of NS 3.04 in three parts. Download each of the three parts and put them on three floppies. The files should fit on standard 1.44 MB floppies.

Go to to this site: http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/#classic
There you will find a program called HJSpilt. This program will put together the three files you have put on the floppies. Put this on the Win 3.1 laptop.

You will need to unzip the three files on the floppies with an ZIP program. I 'm not sure if there are any Win 3.1 programs left that do ZIP.

Once the files are unzipped, HJSplit has an option that joins spilt files. Choose this option. Pick the file:
Code: Select all
n16d304.exe.001
Press OK.

After you are done, you should be left with the file:
Code: Select all
n16d304.exe
Run this in the normal way. You will need to uninstall NS 2.02 first.

After you are done, you can delete the three files you got off the floppies and uninstall HJSpilt in you wish.

Happy Browsing!
