20" laptop from Acer

Postby Antony » Thu 08 Jun, 2006 12:29 am

If 17" laptop is not big enough for you, Acer has a solution... Acer Aspire 9800 20in notebook.

The physical spec of Acer 9800:
dimension: 490 x 380 x 60mm (WxDxH)
the lid itself is 30mm thick (3cm)
weight: 7.8kg
screen size: 20.1 inches.

Other specs:
20.1" TFT LCD display (WSXGA+ resolution of 1680 x 1050)
Intel Core Duo Processor
HD-DVD
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 graphics card (up to 256MB video memory)
Up to 2 GB of DDR2 667 MHz memory, upgradeable to 4 GB

TrustedReview has an article.

Apple was the first major computer manufacture to 1-inch thin widescreen laptop, and also was the first major computer manufacture to release 17-inch widescreen laptop.

Acer beats Apple on releasing the mammoth 20-inch laptop.

Personally, I can't see why anyone would want a 20.1" laptop. Not only does that almost completely defeat the purpose, but you'd be carrying around the spatial equivalent of a pizza box.

The display resolution on this model, as mentioned by TrustedReview, is pretty disappointing. 1680x1050 is good on a 17" laptop, and even better on a 15.4" (such as the Acer Ferrari 4000/5000 series), but on 20.1", it's on the low side.

It's interesting to note, though, that this is the first laptop I've seen in quite some time, save for some Dell Latitude models, that comes with a full range of legacy ports.

1680 x 1050 is the resolution for my 20" Apple Cinema Display. Like Dell and other companies, Apple uses 1680x1050 on 17" laptop, however, that's taking the working distance into account... as the distance between user and laptop is generally shorter than the external monitor.

7.8 kg (17.2 pounds) on your laps? I don't think I will do that.

17.2 pounds? Not even my dad's old 386 laptop is that heavy!

What in the world was Acer thinking when they made it that heavy?

What else was Acer going to do with all that extra space?

How about, ditch some of the heavy junk and make it a few pounds lighter? Even twelve pounds would be alright for something this big.
