4.8: two questions

Postby Josh » Sun 18 Aug, 2002 9:32 pm

a. Will this be the final Communicator release?
b. For those with OS X: How well does Mac 4.8 run under OS X as an classic app?

Without being telepathic I obviously can't say what they are thinking at Netscape, but I personally doubt they would come out with another version unless there was some security fix they needed to implement in that series that comes to light down the road. I'm still waiting for them to put up the release notes for v4.8 on their website so I can see just what is fixed/new in this one.

Either that or if a Microsoft service pack for XP or 2000 purposely hoarks Netscape and they have to release a new version to make it work again...but M$ would never do anything like that...right? :P

Sorry...PC user here. Only think I know about macs is that they had a pretty apple icon in the upper left corner and they had a funky one button mouse, so can't answer your mac question (not like I really answered your other one either for that matter though I guess).

I have an iMac, but I haven't downloaded Netscape 4.8 on it yet,
but just for the sake of testing it, I'll d/l it later and report back.

To you and all previous posts. Is this NS4.8 something new for Macs only. I have not heard of anything past 4.79, at least for PCs. I am surely curious.
I guess that we have the archives for this.

No, it's for Windows and Linux as well as Macintosh. See
my second reply in the thread "New Netscape 4.8 ???"
http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=166
The download links for all 3 platforms are there.

To this moment I don't have crashes with it....when I us NS 4.79 in MacOs X than i have crashes with the browser.... I delete NS 4.79.

With MacOs 9.1, I have also on my iMac it is the same working as in MacOs X
Netscape, I love It.

Of course, it's best to run Communicator natively in Mac OS 9.x,
because you have to wait for the Classic environment to start up
first if you want to run it in Mac OS X. Usually that can take over
a minute, and IMHO, NS4.x is just not worth waiting that long for.

I believe that most people still prefer and recommend Netscape Communicator for e-mails and newsgroups.

How long will the MacOSX take to start up classic mode?
How about running Unix (or Linux) version of Netscape under MacOSX? Possible?

It's not possible to run a Unix/Linux version of either Netscape or Mozilla
in Mac OS X without first installing the X Window system aka XFree86,
then a Unix GUI such as KDE or Gnome. It'd be easier to set aside
a partition on the Mac's HDD, and install a PPC compatible Linux
distribution on it, before installing Linux versions of NS or Moz.

As far starting the Classic environment in Mac OS X, on my old iMac,
it takes just over one minute. As Mac OS X runs better on newer and
faster Macs than the one I have, those that are running Mac OS X
on a G4 Mac, such as the newer flat screen iMac, may find that
that the Classic environment starts up a little quicker.

To coin a phrase, "Your mileage may vary . . . "

So, If I want to get OS X, just run 4.xx under XDarwin? Should I do the same w/ Moz?

AMEN! I'll ask this here, but I can creat a new topic if I need to - does anybody know of a way to download a Communicator stand-alone for e-mail/news? I'd love to use the 4.8 messenger and be able to click on a link and have them open in N7.

No.

But you still can have your Netscape Communicator 4.8 installed and set to be the default for email and newsgroups.
Then you can download Netscape Navigator 6.2.3 (stand-alone) or Netscape 7 stripped-down (and only install Navigator).

I was afraid of that, and that is why I will use the mail client for N7, just so I will not have to copy link locations in 4.8 and paste them into the URL bar in N7. Not a big deal, but it does waste time.
