56X CD-ROM drives

Postby Edward » Mon 07 Apr, 2003 7:31 pm

I've noticed a few companies introduce 56X CD-ROM drives, and was wondering how decent they are.

I currently have a 54X drive, and am not sure if there would be any noticable difference between 54X and 56X.

Ed, just do some math, there's no much difference from 54x to 56x, (compared to 2x to 4x).
And you need to buy 56x CD-ROM discs

My answer, IMHO, is no.

The rating of a drive is the highest (reading) speed the drive can achive (on the outer edge, I believe). I imagine that going from a highest speed of 54 to a highest speed of 56 has almost no effect on the average speed. Vibration may also be an issue and force the drive to slow down.

And who or what program needs such high speeds? I think a 40x would keep all programs happy.

In any case, read a good review before buying anything.

It's not a CD-RW, it's standard CD-ROM (read only) drives that I saw.

I have yet to see a 56X CD-RW, 52x is the fastest I've seen so far, but then, 56x probably isn't too far behind. :)

I read an article a while ago, where some companies had built and tested drives faster than 56x, and the end result was that the disc inside the drive spun around so fast, it broke apart into numerous pieces inside the drive.

I always read the product reviews before making an informed decision. :)

I bought MS Flight Simulator 2000 and was unable to install it because one of the CDs vibrated so bad. Both were silky smooth on an older computer's 4x drive, but terrible grinding noises came out of my 32x drive as Disc #1 tried to spin up. I thought my poor 8x-8x-32x Teac CD-RW was a goner because I couldn't eject the disc or make it stop.

I exchanged the junk quality MS product for another. I'm still leery of spinning CDs too fast.

It turns out that there was actually a problem with the 54x CD-ROM.

On occasion, the system would not detect it during startup, and each time this occurred, Windows would freeze during its loading.

I removed the 54x drive last night, and reinstalled a 52x CD-ROM drive (also from one of the companies that now offers a 56x), and the system starts up perfectly now. :)

I am looking to buy a 48+ speed CD-Rw, can anyone give my some suggestions on model and type, or perhaps which one I should stay away from?
Thanks
