6.0 Netscape Messenger, Inbox gone

Postby Broncfan » Wed 18 Feb, 2004 3:00 pm

Just a quick note to say that this forum is the best Support forum for Netscape that I have run across. Hats off to all who make this happen.

My question:
I was helping a gentleman with his Netscape Messenger e-mail, 6.0. He had an existing address already setup and we added a new account, in the same profile (there is only the default profile) .. We went in and removed one of the account settings, then all his mail and address book disappeared for the original account. Hopefully the e-mails and address books are still on the computer, but I can't find an answer on how to get them back, if they are still around.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?

I can't believe that anyone is still,voluntarily, using NS6.0.
I have never used the default profile, but created one, just for the program.
You will have to provide more info. though. You say that one account setting was removed, without sprecififying which setting. The mail should be on the hard drive, but it is going to be a bear to get the address book in that primitive program.
But, the locations will vary with Operating Systems.

Thanks for the reply Fulvio!
Ya.. not sure why he uses the NS6 .. but he is 'confortable' using it.

Again I should mention that this is two e-mail accounts in the same profile.

You know how you can have two inboxes in the same profile, one for each e-mail address. I removed one of the accounts settings in the 'Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings', 'Remove Account' and then the inbox and addy book disappeared .. Trying to figure out how to retrieve those messages.

Does that help any .. ?

If you remove the account, you lose everything that you had in it. I was afraid that is what happened. Essentially, by removing the account, you cut the bridges or link to the Profile files.
Fortunately, the mail is not lost , it is still on the hard drive. It will be gone only when someone delete the account, or the Profile contents.
I don't remember much about NS6.0, but the contents of Address Book should still be there. You bring one single address book, even without the account. If you want you mail back, ADD the account, with the same name and ISP description and then copy the Inbox, and Sent files(no extention files) from the old and paste to the newly created account. The new account will have the same description as the original one and -1.
If you are asked if you want to replace the present with old file, you are on the right track. Or you may want to have everything in the new account. You should, then, rename the files to be copied (any name will do you). And, the old mail will be as an Archive folder.

I can't beleive there's still someone regularly using Netscape 6.0 on a voluntary basis either!

Aside from all the other advise provided by Fulvio in this thread, I strongly recommend an
upgrade to at least Netscape 7.1, or better still, the Mozilla Application Suite, and then
setting up a fresh new personal profile to use with the upgraded software.

To ensure that your friend is comfortable with using the newer versions of the software, an
updated version of the default Modern theme from Netscape 6.0 is available to download
from here. Called "Venerable Modern" it's installable on Mozilla 1.5 and Netscape 7.1

BTW, I've provided the link to download the official version of Netscape 7.1, but in case
you didn't already know, SD701 provides a custom Streamline version of Netscape 7.1.

Oh bother! I forget to include the theme link! Thanks Mandrake. I'll now go edit my earlier message . . . !

EDIT (about two minutes later) :
Ok, it's fixed. My earlier post now contains a link to the "Venerable Modern" theme . . .

I am a firm believer in solving one problem at the time. An upgrade to anything other than a version 6.x would have been a suggestion, but some people with dial-up, and older machines, are not willing to change, barring a catastrophe. My phylosophy lessonc for the day.
