New features in Netscape 7.01

New features are generally cool, however, Netscape 7.xx is a commercial release, and stability of any feature would be the top priority. (Particularly after the trouble of early Netscape 6 builds)

Goes to show...I should read the whole thing.

need advice

Postby James » Wed 27 Nov, 2002 10:41 pm

I'm so hesitant about installing anything new. It's been a few months since my last post. During that time I've purchased a new computer and to date I've not installed Netscape. I've always had Netscape on every computer I've owned... but this time I'm hesitant. I have a Netscape 7 cd but now I hear that 7.01 is about to be released. I can hardly believe this... no patch... just download (or order????) another 15 - 20 mb of browser suite. I suppose that is fine for DSL and cable users, but poor dial-up suckers like me are left with hours of downloading and for what? two months before the next download?

Okay... advice from you computer geeks (in the best sense of the word). Do I:

1. Install Netscape 7 from my cd?
2. Wait for the official release of Netscape 7.01? Is it really worth the four hours it will take to get it?
3. Download and install the latest offering of Mozilla (1.2) which I've only just heard about through reading this forum?
4. Download and install Mozilla 1.1?

With all these options, it's difficult to really know what to do that "that" is yet another reason I "think" Netscape suffers... there are simply too many paths to take. With IE it's simple: upgrade to 6 or stay at 5.5.

Help me make a decision based upon this:

OS: XP Home
CPU: 2.4 MHz (Pentium 4)
RAM: 256 MB
Hard drive: 120 Gb

I spend about two hours in total on the computer in a day.. mostly email and reading my newsgroups. I do a "little" surfing and play NO games whatsoever.

I would classify myself as just a little past entry-level even though I've been at it for six years.

I fear Mozilla is simply too cutting edge and Netscape has too many bugs requiring me to tweak and modify which would likely end in disaster.

Help! ;-)

I do not see why not.

No way. I have cable, and it took me less than two minute to install 7.01 brand x. I cannot see anything in it which merit a long download.

3. Download and install the latest offering of Mozilla (1.2) which I've only just heard about through reading this forum?
No, it would not do anything much for you, based on what are saying later. But, believe me I would not call Mozilla cutting edge. In spite of what they are saying, the final versions, at least are good and solid, but if you sre so concerned of Netscape 7 bugginess, forget it. I do not believe that you are that bad. Based on your Computer, I would probably have 20 copies of NS7 . Not really, but you got a good one. But, lacking confidence, I would not budge from 4.08.

4. Download and install Mozilla 1.1?
No reason, other than it has been out longer, and bugs may have already shown up.

It too bad, but this is the main reason why IE has become so prevalent. Unfortunately the same people who feel this way are also unaware of all the Security flaws, etc.

Antony: Netscape 6.0 and 6.01 were horrible - So i see what you mean about stability!

James: After downloading, and testing a pre release version of Netscape 7.01 - I still must reccommend Mozilla 1.2 over Netscape 7.0/7.01.

In the popup blocker in 7.01 - it has the ability to keep popups active for some sites - by default AOL sites like Netscape.com, AIM.com, CNN.com etc are all allowed to run popup ads - I immediately disabled this!

Here's my 2 cents... GST inclusive.

James wrote:1. Install Netscape 7 from my cd?

Go for it if you're using Mail/News, although see also 3. If you're not, 2.
2. Wait for the official release of Netscape 7.01? Is it really worth the four hours it will take to get it?

If you're not using Mail/News, upgrading a browser only copy of Netscape 7.0 will not take 4 hours, nor will installing it. However, you're probably best off holding off until 7.01 is out, just-in-case.
3. Download and install the latest offering of Mozilla (1.2) which I've only just heard about through reading this forum?

The main reason to install Mozilla instead of Netscape 7.0 would have to be Mail/News. It has many features added that are both useful and not present in Netscape 7.0x.

I gave it a serious testing before it was released on both Windows and Linux, and would give it the thumbs up. You would have to install all your plugins seperately though.
4. Download and install Mozilla 1.1?

No reason to do this, 1.2 is more stable with more useful features and fewer bugs.

Too expensive. :-pg

I'd say wait until Netscape 7.01 Streamline or Stand-alone versions.

The main reason to install Mozilla instead of Netscape 7.0 would have to be Mail/News.
I'll have to verify this.

4. Download and install Mozilla 1.1?

No reason to do this, 1.2 is more stable with more useful features and fewer bugs.
Are you sure? :-pg

Relative to 1.1, certainly.

On a lighter note...

Please read this Newsgroup thread, especially this one post from Jay Garcia. I am still ROTFLMAO: snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/as5t4h ... tscape.com

Also, saw a thread relating to Mozilla 1.2 being pulled due to problems? Anyone know about this.... Michael???

Incorrect backout of a DHTML related patch, and some bits that were supposed to be in the 1.2 source missing. Nothing to do with dataloss or crashes or the like :-)

Thanks Michael, and I see that Josh has started a thread on the subject. :D
