7.01 won't completely shut down

Postby neondrvr » Tue 28 Jan, 2003 1:37 am

I recently upgraded to 7.01. I'm running winXP and when if I close out netscape, and then try to open it later on, it won't open. If I do the three key salute, and check the processes tab, I see the the Netscape process is still running. After I manually end the process, I can open Netscape again.

I'd like to fix this, but so far have had no luck. I uninstalled, wiped the registry, and re-installed (maybe I didn't wipe well enough).

Any other ideas?

Sometimes it will take a while to remove itself completely out of system memory.

Netscape is more likely to stay in system's memory if you've visited many different type of pages, in particular pages require Java (Applet), sometimes PDF pages may also cause trouble.

My two cents, disable Java in your preference. (but keep JavaScript on)

Thanks, I'll do that, I usually do, but have slacked this time.

I did notice just after posting that netscape only failed to close out when the e-mail client was open. Having only the browser open would close out fine. So, I futzed with a few things, deleted the netscape.net mail account, (which in the past I have never kept) and now it seems to work just fine.

Keeping the fingers crossed,

Yeah, forget to mention, Netscape WebMail can also cause a few problem (halting of Mail for example). I would suggest you use the web interface of Netscape WebMail instead of integrated one.

If you have Quick Launch enabled, this is another reason that Netscape remains in the task list. You will have the Netscape Icon in the System Tray if Quick Launch is enabled.

From the "Help" file:
Quick Launch allows Netscape to stay in memory after you close all Netscape windows. This lets Netscape quickly start up when you need it, without having to load all of Netscape.

FYI: Two threads were found on the Netscape 7 Windows newsgroup. Edited posts with links are located below.

snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/3E18F6 ... @attbi.com
[Problem]I am running NS 7.01 under WinME. I have quicklaunch disabled. NETSCP continues to show up as a running task after NS has been normally terminated. NS will not start again unless I terminate NETSCP.EXE manually. Any suggestions? Thanks.

[Reply] >>>>It already happened to me with a broken theme, I had to delete the chrome.rdf file in my user profile and the xul.mfl file to force NS7 to rebuild my default themes.

[Later Reply]>>>>Yes, delete this file while NS7 is closed (quickstart included) and delete xul.mfl too. but make sure that this is the file in your user profile (see link above for the path to the profiles) and not the original one in the Program files.

[Problem]The problem that I'm seeing is that when I close down netscape, NETSCP.EXE refuses to terminate. thus preventing me from restarting it until I kill the process.

[REPLY]>>>Uncheck the box that says, "empty mail on exit" Open your mail module, then click edit|mail and newsgroup account settings, then click on Server Settings and unclick the box.

[Person with Problem] >>>Thanks. It was unchecked. I checked it, clicked OK, then unchecked it again. Now it seems OK.

Just curious. Were you just noticing that Netscape was not closing, but were able to, apparently, exit and close it? I have been having problems with the Webmail being set up in Netscape, since the Middle Ages, it seems, but I could not get to the home page of Netscape, nor anywhere else. Just stuck.

I have the Quick Launch disabled, and still have the same problem under 98 SE. If I waut about 10 seconds after closing Netscape, it will re-open fine. But anything shorter, clicking the icon does nothing for a few seconds, but then will re-launch afterwards.

During the period it does nothing, I've noticed two Netscape's listed in the Task Manager, one will eventually clear out when Netscape re-launches afterwards.

I have this rudimentary RAM monitor, which is part of a much nicer clock than provided with Win98. It is a horizontal red bar which is on only a bit, when nothing is going on, but moves from left to right when there is activity.
I look at that bar, and wait until it is near zero. I never had a problem when I did that. It may be a problem if there is music program on, but the clue is that bar moving from right to left. http://users.iafrica.com/d/da/dalen/

I found that when running W98, lots of programs took their sweet time closing. If I clicked on an icon prior to the completion of the close program routine, the program would not launch. I had to use PrcView to see what was running and then kill the offending program before I could relaunch it.

Regards,
Sisyphus

p.s. PrcView is available at www.prcview.com It works with W98/2000/XT
