7.02 freezes on startup

Postby janbeck » Sun 04 May, 2003 6:16 pm

I'm running system 9.2 and the latest version of Netscape, which works fine for a while and then freezes when I attempt to run it. In fact, it hangs up the whole system, which then requires a manual restart. Re-installing worked the last time, but today, not.

This time it happened when I attempted to download a PDF file. I suspect that this may be related to the feedback agent, which comes up as Netscape attempts to load, before the BIG FREEZE. Explorer 5.1 works just fine, but then I do not have access to my mail.

Are there known extension conflicts? If there are any workarounds / ideas, I'd be very grateful ...

Thanks,
Jan B.

7.02 freezes on startup

Postby janbeck » Sun 04 May, 2003 6:36 pm

Thanks for the suggestion! I'd like to keep using 7.02 if at all possible, and am just beginning the troubleshooting process. Actually, I am hoping that this is a known issue, and that there is a big, long FAQ about it somewhere, or at least a long thread on this archive? Nothing turned up when I did a search, though.

Yes, I have the latest Norton and the disk gets scanned on each shutdown by Norton and Disk First Aid. Seems to be in good shape.

Since your on Mac, we are somewhat weak on that OS.... but when this happens on a PC, these are the things we do.
LOCKups...
Generally theme related, try using "Modern"
Disable "Empty Trash on Exit" in server settings
Disable "Quick Lanuch"

PDF Issue
This file is handled by a "plugin" if you want to view the file internal to Netscape browser view. If you download the file and store it locally, then your OS decides which program to use, which in both case would be "Acrobat Reader".

I can offer generic advice only, especially since I have only seen Macs from a distance.

1. You can install Netscape without choosing the Quality Feedback agent. Just choose a custom install and uncheck the option for the Agent. You may also decide to download, if you can locate one (I couldn't), a customized CCK version of Netscape 7.02 for a Mac that leaves this Agent out.

2. You normally may keep NS 4.x when you install NS 7.02 (at least on a PC). They are separate programs with completely separate files. Very few people would recommend using only NS 4.x since it is an outdated browser. Some people, however, do prefer using the NS 4.7x mail while using the browser in NS 7.02 (Mail/News is also an optional component).

3. You may wish to do a Clean Install of Netscape. The only directions I know of are for a PC and are found at Ramona's Netscape Solutions. She also has directions for a Custom Install. You will have to translate all of this into settings for a Mac. You may wish to delete (after backing up) the Profile files, which are not removed in a normal uninstall, before you re-install.

I leave you in the hands of others now that I have exhausted my iffy advice.

Jan. I know enough Mac to know that there some problem which you may have that are not occurring in PC. Whatever you caLL extention has a different meaning in PCs. I do not know if Netscape has to rely on plugins, and that 's where there may be a problem. May be it is what you call feedback agent.

Suggestions much appreciated! The p of a at this point sounds like 1) use Aladding Spring Cleanning to uninstall Netscape and all of its associated files and then 2) reinstall Netscape but with the Quality Feedback guy turned off. Sounds like a plan.

Thanks again,
Jan B.
