Postby Peggy » Sun 21 Dec, 2003 2:45 pm

can't get into mail on 7.1 The error is ' the PASS command did not succeed, mail server pop.charter. net responded, incorrect password or account name' Called Charter they changed password, was able to get in for that session only, then back to same error.

Mail folders did not migrate, HIstory did not migrate.

thanks for any help, have been trying since August to get this to work, die hard you say, yes I am. Don't like the cosmetics of IE

Thanks

This is the wrong forum. There is an entire forum dedicated only to Netscape and Mozilla.
I have a couple of questions before I ask you to repost at thre Netscape forum, or I can ask the Moderator to move your post.
You say that the password lasted only one session. Did you save the new password? If so, there is a conflict with the old and new passwords still being stored. There is no problem to change that: Go to Preferences|Privacy and Security|Passwords click on manage passwords, and delete all password referring to your account. There should be at least two of them.
Now try again, you will be asked for your password. Do not store it, if it works, until the next time.

PASS command did not succeed

I had exactly the same problem. Ulitmately, it turned out to be a DNS issue. The reason it worked on MIcrosoft machines and not Unix machines is because the former were using DHCP w/ auto-DNS (and they thus got the correct resolution of mail.xxx.com). The Unix boxes were using the DNS server of my prior ISP (since I did not change everything correctly). I thought the provider of the cancelled email services would purge my domain from their maps, but they did not. Even worse, when running diagnostics through my firewall, the correct IP resolution for mail.xxx.com appeared, though netscape was in fact getting a different address. The mail clients only report connecting to mail.xxx.com , giving no indication what IP they're using. To fix, you need to verify what DNS server you're really using. I took the extra step of trying to get my current ISP to purge mail.xxx.com from their maps after transferring that domain (xxx.com) to another hosting service.

I also spent many days on this, deleting/reinstalling netscape, etc., based on the well intended but off-base recommendations posted to you. If you contact me, I'll walk you through the diagnosis of your machine.
