7.1 LOST IN SPACE.....AGAIN

Postby jscott » Tue 13 Jul, 2004 2:31 am

I run Netscape 7.1 Streamline on a laptop with Windows 88.

I am a very heavy user of E-mail, attachments, etc.

I shut down normally, moved my laptop to another room, powered up normally, and received a WELCOME, you have just installed Netsacpe 7.1 message.

I have now lost all of my Netscape Mail. Completly.
Nothing.

This has happened a number of times.
I have gotten rid of many virus scans, etc. and still loose Netscape.

NOW:
Some of you very intelligent Netscape Gurus can tell me how to find my lost Netscape Mail back.

Also: Is it posisble to run TWO (2) copies of Netscape 7.1 and have one in reserve ? Possible to use the second copy as a back-up & load it once a week ?

If someone knows how I can find out a way to stop this cycle, please let me know.
Thanks for any help.

As for running a second copy of NS 7.1, here's what you can do:
1) Open Profile Manager in your current NS install, and create a new, empty profile.
2) Download Netscape 7.1 if you don't already have a copy of the install
3) Install it to a directory other than the one where your current install is.
4) Open Profile Manager on your recently installed copy of Netscape 7.1 and start it with the empty profile you created before.

Hope this works out.

I am using, at present, Netscape7.1 with two Profiles. You don't need two copies of the program, but rather two different ways to look at the same thing. A the profile does the job. I access the same NS7.1 with one profile of mine, and one of my wife, which are completely different.
However, if you wish to look at two different NS7.1 builds, all you have to do is to install them in a separate directory, as Don said. So, there is knowing which forbids to access a single NS from two or more Profiles. At one time I had five of them, and I could have cared less if one of them acted up.
As for js problem, there is a possibility that NS7.1 was accessed with a profile which had been originally made for another version, or god forbids, Mozilla. Nothing is lost from the hard drive. Take a lot at this excellent fix from Ramona's Netscape Solutions. It should work. http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7lostprofwinxp.html
This happens with all operating systems. It happened to me once with Win98, with profile location: C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles
