7.2 as Default Browser for Help Files

Postby arctrrjel » Thu 16 Mar, 2006 8:33 am

I downloaded Netscape 7.2 . It works fine. But with Photoshop, Autocad etc.- whenever I try to access their Help files, Netscape 4.78 appears instead. It is immediately followed by a Netscape Quatlity Feedback Agent. And then netscape closes down. This never happened when I had 7.1'
Anyway I tried to uninstall 4.78 from Control Panel, but it won't uninstall.
So two questions:
1) How do I get my programs to open Netscape 7.2 automatically whenever I
open their Help Files.
2) If I must uninstall/delete Netscape 4.78, how do I do that if I c an't do it through Control Panel?

1. You need to configure Netscape 7.2 as your "Default" browser. The setting is here: Edit | Preferences | Navigator
Click on the "Set Default Browser" tab. However, once you uninstall Netscape 4.78, you shouldn't have this problem if you have no other Netscape installed. It's still a good idea to set Netscape as the default.

2. Reinstall Netscape 4.78 on top of the existing program. Then it should be listed in Add/Remove. You can download Netscape 4.78 here:

I just downloaded Netscape 4.78 per your suggestion. How do I install on top of the existing Netscape 4.78. Install Shield keeps wanting to create a new Communicator 1 Folder?
Thanks

I am wondering if we understand correctly what is going on. Going back to your initial explanation, you said:
Netscape 4.78 appears instead
. How does it appear? I was going to suggest that you go to the installation location of Netscape Communicator, but the response that you get on installation tells me that there is nothing there. I would say that you, either had installed 4.78 in a nono-standard location, or that you don't hav anything there. Did you have 4.78 installed at one time, and what happened to it? Secondly, and a more serious cause of problem is what happened to NS7.1? Did you uninstall it, before proceeding to 7.2.
Now, why is 4.78 coming up, I don't know, but if you installed 7.2 on top of 7.1, you may have some problem.
So, let's sort things out.

I hit the wrong button.

Anyway I have 4 folders and 1 file under C;/Program Files/Netscape

1. BackUp - nothing in it
2. Communicator - contains a lot of files and folders including "netscape.exe" which opens Netscape 4.8 box which is then immediately followed by an error message saying that "Netscape Navigator has encountered an error and needs to close...send message to Microsoft?..."
3. Netscape 6 which actually is Netscape 7.2 which I installed on top of 7.1
It has lots of files and folders
4. Users - which contain current profiles for 7.1/7.2
5. NPSWF32.dll

So yes I did install 7.1 on top of 7.2
I also did a screen capture of my netscape files, but I don't know how to post it. If any of this is any help, please let me know a solution. I know now I may have messed up with these random downloads of netscape.

Thanks for your help.

I don't know what you may have done to NS4.8, or whichever communicator you have, but I would open that folder, if the computer allows you, and, look for a file called unwise.exe. It may or may not help, since you don't have the item listed in the Add/Remove, but it is worth a shot.
Then, we are going to attend to the other matter. aside from the fact that it is not good to install 7.2 on top of 7.1, you will be told that not even NS7.2 is suitable, any more. If you don't want to mess with downloads or whatever, do the following: 1. go to Program Files|Common Files|mozilla.org|GRE, and see what you have there. If you have only Netscape7.2 installed, you should have only one folder, with a long number, but starting with 1.7.2... That one is NS7.2's. If you have also a 1.4.... folder, it belongs to NS7.1, and may have not been removed, and should be deleted. So, next, we address our attention to the program. It can be uninstalled, if you have it listed in the Add/Remove. When I did this, I copied and pasted the plugins folder (your fifth file is a plugin, for Flash}, and then deleted the entire Netscape6 folder.
Now, you will need the download file. If you have it, great. Just open it, and you will be directed to install 7.2, in a Program Files|Netscape folder, and it is good to select that a subfolder be created within the original Netscape folder. Call it what you want. The new installation will pick up the same profile which you had before. Make sure that your preferences indicate that it is default, and see what happens. You should have a good installation of 7.2, although I don't know about 4.8.

Hi
You were right,. I finally downloaded the correct Netscape (4.8) Installed it, then was able to uninstall it. So far 7.2 comes up each time I click on various Help Files, etc.
I did check into Program Files/Common Files..../GRE amd there was only 7.2 listed.
I still have a lot of Communicator folders - most of them empty - here and there. . Should I delete them. Or let things be.
I am hesitant to uninstall and then reload 7.2 at the moment, since everything seems to be working okay. I really appreciate your help. It was great. If things get dicey, I will take your advice and uninstall and then reload. Thanks again for your generous and prompt help.

You are, probably, ok, but keep in mind what we said in case something weird goes on.
As for the 4.8 files/folders, you should keep the Users folder. If nothing else it has the old bookmarks and mail. The Plugins folder does not hurt to keep. Everything else can go.
