I find it quite interesting that someone with a 12mbps connection complains about loading a 92kb file. Calculating everything, it means that loading 92kb on a 12mbps connection (1.5mbytes/sec) takes 0.009765625 seconds. I wouldn't call that "too long". Besides, the equivalent JPEG version is 52kb, a minimal difference, and it doesn't look very good without transparency (which JPEG doesn't support).

And going back on topic, I'd really appreciate it if this thread didn't turn into another JPEG-vs-PNG thing. I only uploaded a PNG because that's what my PowerBook spit out, and being so small, I didn't bother to convert it to another format.

I wish I had that speed, further, your calculation is faulty.

I wouldn't have complained if it could be downloaded in less than 0.009765625 sec (as you incorrectly calculated).

A cartoon like interface would be the best, otherwise, use the default interface.

Note, only a quick drawing, but it shows the quiz stage.

BTW, that's my handwriting ;-)

I'd like to do that, but I have no idea how to implement that in Java, plus I can't draw. By the way, you're a good drawer :)

Are you able to display background image in Java at all?

I probably can, but I don't know how.

Excuse my poor drawing skill.

This is the updated version of the stage:

701Mania - The Game, version 0.3 is now out!

Like the previous version, this was written in Java, however, this version was made using the faster and more native AWT toolkit instead of Swing, which makes the game both smaller and faster!

To avoid losing the source code again, I'm publishing it this time. Unfortunately, I lost the icon I was using for the Mac version, which means that this version doesn't have an icon (it uses the Mac OS X generic application icon). If anyone wants to volunteer an icon, I'd appreciate it :P

Linux users, it is recommended that you do NOT use Sun's Java, and use the free GIJ (GNU Interpreter for Java, part of GCJ) that comes with most distributions instead. AWT support on Sun's Java for Linux is very poor, not to mention it looks ugly as hell. Linux screenshots are taken using GIJ.

To win this game, you must correctly answer 17 questions (yes, seventeen questions). Some questions have been added that have not been onthe 701Mania show (yet).

Download links:

Jar File (A mere 28K!)
Mac OS X Application Bundle (on a gzipped ISO image, only 20KB!)
Source code (in .tar.gz format, 12kb)

Screenshots (none of the screenshots is bigger than 10.6kb):

Image
(Linux version, using GIJ 4.1.2 20060928 (prerelease, as shipped with Ubuntu Edgy))

Image
(Mac version, using Java 1.5.0_06)

Image
(Windows version, using Java 1.6.0 Release Candidate, thanks to Don_HH2K for the screenshot)

If you find any bugs in the game, please report them.

Oh, and just for the hell of it, the smallest screenshot ever, with not that good a quality:

The JAR file works on Windows. I assume there's no standalone Windows EXE file this time.

If you really want to use Sun's Java for Linux (unrecommended), you should use at least version 1.5. Screenshot of this thing on Linux using Sun's Java 1.5.0_08...

Image

As you can see, it looks less than ideal. GIJ is recommended.
