8.1 Browser with 7.2 Email

Postby mkar1936 » Thu 30 Nov, 2006 3:53 pm

I have been using Netscape 7.2 browser along with the 7.2 email client. I have just downloaded and installed the new 8.1.2 Netscape browser. When I click on a link in an email (using the 7.2 email client) it opens Netscape 7.2 instead of the 8.1.2 that I would prefer it use. I have not uninstalled the 7.2 browser because I don't know if it will uninstall the 7.2 email client with it (and thus delete ALL my email, etc.).
Ideally, I want the 8.1.2 browser with 7.2 email client. How can I keep the new browser with the old email client and not lose my email and folders that I have stored?

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP

1. If you Uninstall Netscape, both the Browser and the Mail client are removed. It is a package deal. You do, however, have the option of not deleting your data.

2. I don't have Netscape 8. When you installed it, did it give you the option to set it as the default browser?

Look in the Registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet
the data there is the name of the browser that is the default. On my system it is
FIREFOX.EXE

But there is also a sub-key for each of the browsers installed on your system.
I have three:
firefox.exe
IEXPLORE.EXE
Netscp.exe ----- [I have Netscape 7.1]

Note: There is a similar but shorter set of entries under HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Internet Explorer may use that for per-user customization. The Mozilla products seem to be inconsistent in setting, checking, and honoring the settings between HKCU and HKLM. I don't have it straight.

If Netscape 8 also uses "Netscp.exe" as it's key value, then I would guess that there is no way to differentiate between NS 7 and NS 8.

NS8.x uses "netscape.exe". The ideal situation is to reinstall NS7.2, which will pick up its profile, which is not affected by uninstalling the program. Then, download Thunderbird, which will ask, on installation if you want to import the settings from NS7.2. Then, you should open NS.x, and select Tools|Options|General and place a check mark in the default browser section.
Finally, NS7.2 can be uninstalled. But, you should make sure that Thunderbird works, and is selected as default mail client.
I don't think that it is possible to have NS8.x as default browser, and NS7.2 as mail only.
