98se Trouble

Postby TUBA4 » Sat 30 Aug, 2003 1:40 pm

I would like to reinstall 98se over the existing but don't know if that will destroy everything that's already there. My 98se is unable to restore damaged files & i'm sure there are many. I'm not too swift with PCs. I have only a few programs installed of which IE5.5sp2, Netsc v4.7, Quicken, CD burner, a map program to name a few. However i have about 500 favs between IE & Netsc & hundreds of emails many of which are priceless.
It would be great if someone would be able & willing to post instructions for me on how to proceed from here. I would be truly greatful.
Thanx Y'all, TUBA4

In the past, I have reinstalled 98 SE over itself (without reformatting the hard drive), and it left everything already installed, as it was, afterwards.

You could always do a backup of your fav/bookmarks on a floppy.

If you're still having trouble, it is possible to do a clean install of Windows 98 SE without having to bork the entire hard drive. So try this: boot up with a Windows 98 Boot disk and make sure it has the necessary CD-ROM drivers. Go to your C: drive and move all of the bootfiles to another location. Then using the CD, do a clean install of Windows 98 SE into another directory (e.g. Win98). After that, you should be able to start up in the Windows GUI once again and get everything salvaged in time. Hopefully, this should work especially when you have many files on the hard drive

Why would you do that? Just do as Ed suggested, or put the hard disk in another computer and retrieve your data.

I would do that because if you have a clean install of Windows98 it's more stable than the overlay install, even though you have to reinstall the progams. It is also another method too, although it's just more complicated.

Now, if you're a user of the Windows 98SE Upgrade and you cannot boot into Windows, you'll have to move the bootfiles and install Windows 98FE and then upgrade it to Windows 98SE again for a clean install. I should've stated that the my method was intended for Win98SE Upgrade or OEM CD users who have trouble with booting into Windows. Sorry about the confusion.
