I have two questions -- one I have dealt with regarding mail previously that has popped back in a wierd way and the second I just noticed. Number 1: why does NS 7.01 mail change my SERVER NAME to "localhost" every couple of days. I set it as "pop.ameritech.yahoo.com." Today, I checked it and it had been changed back to "localhost" all by itself. By the way, the smtp settings are NOT changed. Question 2: every so often, I must re-enter my ID and password on sites that I visit every day (like this one). Is there a reason for that? Thanks.

1) Local Host
Are you using any virus checker' (Norton SW 2002 does) or some email spam programs requires the "local host -(or)- 127.0.0.1" in the server name field. Since this is occuring automatically, my guess it is you AV (per email scanning functions).
2) Password ID
I'm sure you checked "save password". If you feel password should be managing, go to password management, delete the entry for the site. When request comes back up, check appropiate fields. Also check to see how your cookies are being saved.

Dennis L.: I DO have a virus checker (PC-Cillin 2003) and that might be the culpret. I am going to contact Trend to see if there is a patch that will stop this. I'll give what you suggest in regard to password a try. It is no big thing, really, but I am curious.

As the saying goes "it's not a problem, it's a feature". In this case it could be true. If required, this is the scheme of things... per email...
When messages are sent to you, they do NOT go directly to mail client, but get temporarly diverted to "local host or 127.0.0.1". Then the AV or Spam programs do there thing. When they complete there job step, it is then moved to your email client, which disperse emails per folder rules. This is all done dynamically when you download your email from your ISP server.

There is probably no patch needed. Most virus scanners have an option to enable or disable email virus scanning. If your program has the option to disable it, it should stop changing your server info. Of course, then incoming emails won't be automaticlly checked.

I have sent an inquiry to Trend Micro (the maker of PC-Cillin) so I hope to have an answer tomorrow. However, I think you are correct about the antivirus being responsible, and, if my email still works as it is supposed, the av can change the name to anything it likes.
