A few problems with latest NS version, and a question...

Postby hellslave » Tue 11 Mar, 2003 1:46 pm

Problem(s) first, question(s) second...

Conflict between NS (7.0.2) and Downlowd.com:

Whenever I click on a program's "Download Now" link to download it, rather than forwarding me to the download, it just, in essence, refreshes the page. I've tried uninstalling then reinstalling, yet the problem persists. What kind I do to fix this?

NS' built-in messenger:

How can I remove everything related to Netscape's version of AIM? I'm much happier using the official, stand-alone version.

Netscape mail and Outlook Express 6 connection conflict:

I've setup the IMAP settings correctly, so that I can check my NS mail though Outlook Express, yet after adding my NS mail account, my login is always refused/rejected (yes, I entered the login information correctly) when I try to download the folders for said account. What can I do to fix this?

...and lastly:

Is there any program I can get, or tweaking I can do, so that Netscape will adopt whatever XP visual style I may be using, much like IE does?

My instant messaging IDs can be found in my profile, in case anyone who may have the answers would like to talk with me directly.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You cannot remove the AIM component without removing the MAIL component in the official Netscape release. However, in DJGM's releases - he has made it possible to still install Mail, without the AIM component. You can get his releases here.

I cannot answer the unanswered question.
1. How do you have set the Preference Navigator/ Downloads? It should open a progress dialog.
2. When you say Netscape Mail, you mean Webmail, correct?
There is no conflict. It is simply a case of a propriatary setting of a Webmail ,as an IMAP server in Netscape. You cannot set it in OE, any more Hotmail in Netscape Mail( that is the correct name for all the mail functions). Basically, Webmails are just that.
3. Sorry I have no idea about what type of Viewing you have in mind. I don't have XP.
4. There is another kind of download which can take care of your AIM question. I will leave this answer hanging. You can contact me direct if you wish.

With Download.com, after clicking "Download Now", it usually forwards me to a page that says the download will start in a second, and then the dialog box pops up, letting me select whether to save to disk or to open, the usual stuff. But now, I don't get forwarded to that page at all, it just refreshes the one I'm currently on. I recorded exactly what it does, so I can send it to you if you'd like.

I just check my Netscape mail by opening it up in the browser, by clicking the envelope icon in the bottom-left corner. I'm pretty sure its being webmail-based has nothing to do with it, as I've been able to connect to, and download the folders of my Earthlink webmail. ...and evidently, I can set it in OE, because when adding accounts, I can add both a POP3 accounts, and IMAP accounts. My only problem is that whenever I try to download the folders, it says that the server has rejected my login.

I don't think that we are talking about the same thing. Netscape has not not had anything but Webmail for years, and it can be set in OE, but it does not work, because only the special IMAP configuration of 7.x allows to access it. When I say Netscape webmail it is of the type xxxx@netscape.net. Earthlink is an entirely different thing, because it is an Internet Service Provider (ISP), and you probably can set it up as a xxxx@earthlink.com( or .net). I am sure that you can access your Earthlink mail from a website, if you are away from home. But that set up is not of the kind which will show up in either Netscape or OE mail.

CNET must have updated its software or something, because I can now download from there with no problem at all.

The imap server that I use, is imap.netscape.net, and OE connects to it no problem, it's just that the server won't accept my login.

I looked into DJGM's releases, but they either included both, mail and AIM, or neither. ...and Fulvio, what was that "other download" you mentioned?

Netscape webmail uses a modified form of IMAP, which is why Netscape Webmail and regular IMAP are listed as seperate options in Netscape's Mail/News account wizard - and why Netscape Webmail can't be used with Mozilla Mail/News (and Outhouse Excess, etc).

As Hendikins said the server is not what you expect, is is imap.netscape.com, and if can make it work in OE, let me know, because it would be a new one. It also requires AIM, and you do not use the Webmail password, but rather the AIM password, so it is quite different.

REad the bottom of the page carefully.

Compact is exactly what I've been looking for, and is perfect, except for a nagging problem that I've suffered with even while using a normal version of NS, in that after I've done all I needed to do in the mail client and then close it out, the task bar button goes away, but I can still see the mail client, and it takes a good 45 seconds to switch back to whatever web page I might have been on at the time I was using mail.

Oh, and another problem I've been dealing with, since I believe Netscape 6 came out, is that every now and then when I click a link on a website, or even if I just hit the enter button when searching for something, rather than taking me to where the link should, it just takes me to a picture that's related to the site. The only fix for that, that I know of, is just to restart the browser. I'm not sure what's causing it, and I don't recall ever reading anything about other people experiencing it.

I will skip the first part, because it does not ring any bells.
As for the second paragraph., take a look at your Preferences/Advanced/ Scripts & Plugins. It may something to do with the way that preference is set

If it has something to do with more prefs. scripts, or plug-ins, I don't what/where it could be.

I tried using only the mail client, so as soon as it opened and started to load up, I closed Netscape so that the mail was the only open window I had. Well, after checking my mail and closing it out, which it did with extreme ease, I found that I could no longer open Netscape at all, and was forced to restart my computer in order to open and run it once again.

Since this has happened in Netscape Compact variety, you may want to post at its forum. http://s19p444.server19.yourwebstart.co ... /index.php

However, if you wish to access only mail, you can make a copy of the icon, and right click|properties, and add -mail to the Target. You should rename that icon to Netscape Mail. I do not know why you would lock up. Check your Close Program (Cntrl+Alt+Del) to see if any Netscape line is open after you close your mail.
