A Question for Dial-up users....

Postby Dickerson » Sun 24 Nov, 2002 3:10 am

Don't ask me why, but I am thinking of giving up my Cable Modem for a regular, lower cost, dial-up account. Traditionally, I have not had much luck with N4.7* products reliably dialing up an account, downloading the mail, and then disconnecting the modem.

Can anybody with N7 and a dial-up account tell me if it works any better?

Thanks. . .

I used NS 6.x under dial-up and found that Gecko renders as fast as it does if you are using cable/DSL. You should have no worries.

That is good news, also, but....

What I am more worried about is when set up to automatically check e-mail every XX minutes, my N4.79 would automatically dial-up the account, log in, check for and download mail, but would not disconnect.

Is this still the case, or does N7 close the connection?

Thanks for the reply . . .

dialup & Netscape 7

Postby Ghostman 1 » Sun 24 Nov, 2002 10:20 am

I am using a dialup with Netscape 7 & 6.23 as well as Mozilla and I have no problems... But I have a Question for you , Why set it to download xx minutes anyway??? Why not just check it manually once or twice a day..
I think it would be allot saver that way... :D

I don't think Netscape 7 will close the connection. However, if you can set the default internet connection to be automatically dialed, then Netscape 7 would do the same job as NS 4.79.
Please note, you will have to have Netscape 7 Mail window opened (can be minimised) for the automatically check new emails to work. (This is a bug)
Also, Netscape 7 might download mail automatically for you during checking. (You can configure this setting in Preference.)

If you don't have special reason for checking emails all day, I would suggest you follow Ghostman's suggestion.

I do not have a reason to have mail checked every XX mintues, I am just used to it being that way. I am contiplating using a program called ESPmail, in conjunction with Netscape, that may serve my purposes.

Thanks for all the help and ideas.
