About GRE folders

Postby Fulvio » Mon 24 Jul, 2006 11:20 am

The moment that the Mozilla Corp. decided to split the program files into two parts, one of which is a GRE folder of Common Files|mozilla.org|GRE. There had been problems with a bug in NS7.1 which did not remove its GRE folder, making it impossible to start an installed 7.2. The problem can show up in different ways, as well. So, I decided to take a look at my GRE folder. I found three folders there. A 1.8.0.1, 1.8.0.2 and a 1.8.0.4. I was able to match the last one to Seamonkey1.0.2. What are the other two from? I don't have any other programs left, which are installed, if the GRE folders are related to a Mozilla, Netscape, Donzilla, or what have you? Why are the GRE folders separate from the program, and placed in the Common Files. What is "common" to them?
I think that I should be able to delete the first two folders. As I read them, the folders are of 01-30-2006, and 04-04-2006, respectively. The 1.8.0.4 folder matches the 05-16 date of Seamonkey1.0.2.

Whenever I install SeaMonkey or Mozilla, I always install it with the [tt]-greLocal[/tt] switch so the GRE gets installed in the same folder as Mozilla. I do this just so I don't run into issues later when I install a new version. My guess is that the 1.8.0.1 and 1.8.0.2 folders were from SeaMonkey 1.0 and 1.0.1, respectively. SeaMonkey 1.0 was Gecko 1.8.0.1-based and it was complied on Jan. 30, likewise, SeaMonkey 1.0.2 was Gecko 1.8.0.2-based and was compiled on April 4.

I was surprised to see that the two earlier GREs were side by side in the same mozilla.org|GRE folder, as I had said in my first sentence, before. I think that you mean that when you say that you use the -grelocal switch. The folders go in the correct place, but, fortunately, the remaining GRE does not affect the use of the more recent program, like a remaining NS7.1 folder was affecting 7.2.
This is the first time that i noticed that, as I never had a problem starting SM.
