Accessing a computer over the internet

Postby Ron Williams » Wed 23 Mar, 2005 3:43 pm

I have the IP address of my computer that I want to access. I also have the name, but I was wondering how I can access a computer if I have an IP address and the computer name over the internet. I want to access a XP pro from an XP home. I have enabled the drive to share itself.

You can do one of two things: since one of the machines runs XP Pro, you can run initiate a Remote Desktop session between the two machines over the Internet (which I believe is possible if neither computer is behind a gateway/switch/router/etc...). Or, if it is installed on the XP Pro machine, enable the Routing and Remote Access service, and set up a VPN server. That way you can establish a virtual network between the two computers over the Internet and be able to access the two through My Network Places.
