Accessing Back-up Files.

Postby Swordfish » Sun 12 Feb, 2006 2:05 pm

Hi. Having lost my PFC recently, I have been having a good search and have found several back-up files. They are mostly in code but there are bits in plain text, some of which are obviously extracts from my old emails. I would like to open these files but when I Open With and click on AOL>OK, I get "File may not be supported by AOL ---- will try to open as a text file" > OK , then I get "File too large to open using AOL ---- use other application". How can I open or "restore" these as text files please.? Sword. :?

Are those email backups?
And what is PFC?

In short, you will need to re-install the application you were using, and put the back up file in the normal place and hope the application will read it.

Thanks Antony. 1) Yes. 2) Personal Filing Cabinet where sent and read received email is stored after a couple of weeks in the Mailbox. 3) As the app: I was using was AOL that would mean a full reinstall, so I'll wait a while to see if any other suggestions come up. I believe there is a simpler method but have never got the details. Cheers, Sword.

And I assume "Personal Filing Cabinet" is from programme AOL provides, I am not an AOL customer, and I will leave this for other people to assist you.

Thanks Antony. 1) Correct. 2) I have received this response to my query on the AOL Message Boards which has solved my problem. I can confirm that it works provided the .pfc extension is brought up in the "Files of Type" box when navigating to the renamed file.

[Quote] Right click the backup file with your screen name and select copy, paste it to the desktop... right click the file on your desktop and select rename, add a .pfc extension to it (don't miss the dot out!) open AOL and click file> open, navigate to the renamed file and open it.[\Quote] Cheers, Sword.
