Accessing Netscape Mail using Thunderbird

Postby warwick30 » Sun 03 Oct, 2004 4:05 pm

I have installed Thunderbird 0.8 and I'm trying to add a new account to access mail from my Netscape email account. Does anyone know the setting to use for the Netscape Mail Server? mail.netscape.net results in an error; pop.netscape.net just seems to do nothing; pop3.netscape.net results in an error. Also, do I tick the Secure Connection (SSL) and/or secure authentication? Thanks very much. Warwick

OK, clear something up for me first: Are you using Netscape ISP Mail or Netscape WebMail?

Netscape WebMail cannot be used with Thunderbird. Netscape ISP Mail has a POP3 server, but I have no idea what it is. I would suggest you check at their Help section.

I found a newsgroup for Netscape ISP. The settings are listed in a reply to a message
DiscoFever lists the server for server for the Webmail IMAP server.
The pop settings are pop.isp.netscape.com to receive mail
smtp.isp.netscape.com to send.

Thanks for the responses.

I have tried
imap.mail.netcenter.com,
pop.isp.netscape.com,
pop3.isp.netscape.com.

I was either unable to access the server or received a user name / password not correct error (yet I'm 100% sure the one I'm using is correct as I re-tried using the netscape webmail site).

I've been reading of others experiencing similiar problems with Netscape. Could it be their server problem?

Still trying to configure Thunderbird to access Netscape!! Hope I do before I'm too old to send/receive emails!

I did not comment on the Netscape Webmail, because , I thought it was established before that you wanted to connect a netscape ISP account.
See the first reply from Don Luchini. This is part of his answer:
"OK, clear something up for me first: Are you using Netscape ISP Mail or Netscape WebMail?

Netscape WebMail cannot be used with Thunderbird. "

Well maybe this is my problem then. Here's a recap of the "problem".

I have (amongst others) a Netscape email warwick304@netscape.net

Before switching to Firefox I used Netscape and setup the mail program within Netscape to access this account. That worked fine.

When I migrated over to Mozilla, my Netscape email problems started. Mozilla could not access the a/c. I then "found" Thunderbird and was able to setup access to my home ISP email accounts with no problems.

Now I know I can go to the Netscape webmail site and access my Netscape email there fine. Does this mean I only have a Netscape webmail email a/c? I thought I had a "proper" Netscape email a/c.

Sign me "Confused Canadian in New Zealand".

Thanks. Warwick
PS Thanks for all your help by the way. W.

If you can accept the fact Netscape customizes Mozilla, and whaever comes from it, then you will understand what I am saying.
It is a chicken/egg dilemma. Mozilla is the chicken, i.e. the basic thing. Netscape is the egg, derived from the chicken.
So, you do not have a Netscape account, but rather a Mozilla account.
Webmail has been handled so poorly, that I doubt that it will show up in Mozilla. It is up to AOL to do it.
And, FYI, AOL mail can be set up in Mozilla, but though IMAP, it is a different set up.

Well to continue with the analogy I think my egg is scrambled. Thanks for trying to help me set it up. Will just have to continue using webmail and slowly wean everyone off sending me mail to that account.

Thanks again. Warwick
