Accessories|System Tools is Empty!

Postby Fulvio » Thu 10 Aug, 2006 4:52 pm

It seems that a few months ago, when I uninstalled a program, it went berserk, and, proceeded to remove a lot of shortcut. I fixed all of them easily enough, but I can't figure out how to replenish the Accessories|System Tools. I can find the Defragmentar, etc. but would like something handier. Can someone guide me? Thanks.

Accessories|System Tools is Empty!

Fulvio, I am sure there is a much, much easier way, but you can find all of the System Tool Programs in Windows\System32, and recreate the System Tool Folder by creating shortcuts from the actual programs. For example, System Restore is in Windows\System32\Restore\rstrui.exe

I hope someone has a better way, but in the meantime this is a workaround.

I thought of that approach. but, it would not accomplish what I wanted, i.e. restoration of the item in All Programs. For instance, I had Microsoft Works, and, only reinstalling fixed the problem. And, I still had a microsoft Works item with no dropdown. I have at least six programs like that. But, it may be handy to have at least a couple of those shortcuts, handy.

Fulvio, there is a quick way to restore as you stated below.
"i.e. restoration of the item in All Programs. For instance, I had Microsoft Works, and, only reinstalling"

Right click on the desktop, and create a New Folder. Name this folder System Tools, then gather, and drag and drop all the shortcuts to the various system tools programs into this folder.

Now, right click on the Start Button and choose the option, Open All Users. You should now be looking at a Windows Explorer window. Click on Programs...click on Accessories...Now from the desktop, drag and drop the folder you created, System Tools, anyplace in an open spot in the window. Close out of Explorer. Go Start, Program, Accessories, System Tools, and you will again have the pop out sub menu. If you wish, you can also create a sub folder in this manner.

The easiest way to get back all the shortcuts: With the help of a friends computer, create the Systems Tools Folder as outlined above, then go Start,Programs, Accessories, System Tools. At this point right click on the first program listed... which is Backup on my system, and click on Properties. Click on the Find Target Button which will open the Windows System 32 window with the Backup program highlighted. Right click and hold the highlighted program and drag it to the desktop. You will be presented with a sub menu. Choose, Create Shortcuts Here. Then drag and drop the new shortcut into the Systems Tools Folder you created. Do this for all the programs, then burn to a CD and put the Folder back where it should be on your system as described above.

I hope I explained this clearly, and hope this might solve your problem. This also works for grouping or filing different programs. I have folders for Audio, Graphic Arts, Animation, Corel, etc, etc. all under Programs, which contain only programs that apply to the subject.
