Account mail settings

Postby piloto3524 » Sun 07 Mar, 2004 12:23 pm

For years we have only used Netscape as a browser. We still have NS 4.7 on the hard drive. We were one of the first ones to get the DSL in our area a couple of years ago. Pacific Bell is now SBC DSL internet server. We have Windows 98SE. When I upgrade to 6.2 the 4.7 remained. I could never find my account mail settings window in 6.2, but they were still there in 4.7. So I used it and thought it a way of not doing extra programming by NS. I had an occasion to call SBC a couple of months ago for a problem and the operator said if I was willing to sign with them for an additional year we could get a discounted rate. Since they have the only ballgame in the city I agreed. The new rate would take effect in a couple of months; early March. I woke up one morning the find a error message from my email saying I couldn't receive email because I was in violation of policy 5.0.0 of the Prodigy something. Somehow, overnight I was pushed into using Internet Explorer for email. I am not sure what happened. I called and went through quite some time trying to reset the mail protocols so that the email in NS6 would work. Since the "Account Settings" were not in Edit, Preferences, Mail and Newsgroups folders I assumed that I had to use the NS4.7 program to make these settings. I did and they assured me it would work. It didn't. I then download the NS7.1 and it doesn't have the "Account Settings" where it suppose to be either. The Help menus tells me specifically to go to the Edit,Preferences, Mail and Newsgroups, and then to Account Settings. But again there in no AS under M and N. Then I wiped out my entire settings on NS4.7 and I am still receiving and sending mail - without any protocols on the IE. I can still send email on the NS7.1 without the protocol info. I would much prefer the sophistication of NS7.1 mail over the IE DSL Mail. I know the SMTP and POP stuff. What do I do to get it back?? Where in NS 7.1 is "Account Settings"? As additionally confusing information - I got an all-in-one hp officejet 4110 about 6 months ago. It has a scan to email function. When I use it, it scans to email into the NS4.7 format and not the 6.2. hp told me they only recognize the 4.7 format. That does seem to make good business sense.

You posted a very long message, which, in large part, it deals with the fact that you can't find the account settings.
Since several accounts can be set up inc NS6/7, it would be very unmanageable to have everything under Edit|Preferences. So, if you click Tools|Mail and Newsgroups, you should be able to access Mail and News Settings. In Mail, and mail only, you can see an additional line, to bring up the Account Settings. There is also the envelope, moved to the bottom left.
And, there has been an uniform non-support from ISPs, and hardware manufacters, and many make it difficult to boot. SBC hasc been one of those.

By the way the Help menu says:"To set up a mail or newsgroup account, first open the Window menu and choose Mail & Newsgroups".
May be you did not understand what was meant by Window menu. It is on top toolbar.

Account settings in NS 7.1

Postby piloto3524 » Sun 07 Mar, 2004 5:40 pm

In short that is my problem. There is no Mail & Newsgroups option under Tools. There is a Mail & Newsgroups under "Window" in the top task bar, but all it does is bring up my inbox email window showing the different folders and what is pending in the inbox, Get Messages, etc.. When I search the "Help" it tells me that the Account Settings is in Edit. Preferences, Mail & Newsgroups. path. But it is not there. Where the heck is it?

Belay that last. Eureka - I found it. One must get the "Compose Mail" window up. And then go to edit, preferences, etc. Thanks putting me on the right track

In case it helps (you or someone else) figure out all the mail settings, here is a webpage with lots of screenshots:

SBC

Postby piloto3524 » Thu 11 Mar, 2004 10:21 am

Thanks for all your help. But, I give up. It's kinda like the phone companies. I get this letter from a phone service I don't have. In it they've enclosed a check. If you use the check it means you are requesting them to switch your service to them. That's basically what happened with SBC. I had DSL with Pacific Bell when they first introduced it. Pacbell then became SBC. After using all of the Netscape browsers over the years (which I prefer) with the same ISP my mail doesn't work one morning. Just so happens I called SBC two months earlier and they turned me onto to a lower rate. I bit. Two months later I was automatically migrated (whatever the hell that means). I just know that none of the Netscape browsers work for mail anymore. I have to sign in every time to get mail and now am switching over to the MS cloned browser, IE. After hours on the phone with SBC tier two support in San Francisco and a couple of guys in India I give up. Lost all my email addresses and some important emails. Installed and uninstalled 'til my face turned blue. The only good thing that came out of this, is this web site. Which I have already bookmarked (or now "Favorited?"). Thanks again.

I am not a tech support person. Someone more knowledgeable will be around shortly.

However, I am using Mozilla 1.6 right now and it's excellent, I get my email too. It was transferred automatically somehow from IE 6.0
I know that I didn't import or export or whatever one should do and it has the M for mozilla on the page.

If you still have NS 4.x on your HD, I remember when I had NS4.x
I made a profile by clicking on Start|Netscape| then perhaps Communicator. Somewhere there is a folder called Profile.
I did have IM at that time but I used a different name for the profile.

I still used Netscape Webmail even when I didn't have Mozilla or Netscape on this PC. I just had IE6.0

Now I just use Mozilla 1.6, email from my ISP as before with Mozilla and, I use Netscape Webmail sometimes. The Webmail is on the www.Netscape.com homepage.

Don't give up, somebody will be around to help you that is more knowledgeable than I am. I just wanted to tell you what I remember about getting Netscape webmail.

From what I can gather, it was your choice to migrate to SBC Yahoo...See
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5217
Q: Why would I want to migrate my account? Do I have to? (#5217)

If this is an SBC Yahoo DSL account see
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5826
Q: How do I setup my SBC Yahoo! email account? (#5826)

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5826
Q: How do I setup my SBC Yahoo! email account? (#5826)
A: For new and migrated users (you must change to these settings after migration).

Use the servers corresponding to your email address:
{snip}

Address: @pacbell.net
POP server: pop.pacbell.yahoo.com
SMTP server: smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com

{snip}
User ID requires domain (for both SMTP and POP) - that means use your full address name@domain.net for POP user ID. If using Netscape, use name%domain.net instead.

Outgoing mail with these servers requires SMTP authentication.

Make sure your Incoming POP server for each mail account is: pop.pacbell.yahoo.com

Make sure your Outgoing (SMTP) server name is smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com and that it is set to be the default server:
Open a Mail window and go to Edit | Mail&Newsgroup Account Settings
- In the left pane of the Mail&Newsgroup Account Settings window:
Scroll down the list and select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
- Now look to the right of the preferences window and make SURE the outgoing (smtp) SERVER NAME IS smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com
-Make sure you checked the box for " Use name and password" and that your user name is your FULL e-mail address, for example xxxxxxxx@pacbell.net OR try xxxxxxxx%pacbell.net as suggested for Netscape.
- Click the Advanced button on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) preferences screen and see if any additional server names are listed. If so, select the other server names and remove.

Also:
In in each mail account's Server Settings, click on the Advanced button to make sure that Always use default server .... is selected. This setting determines what SMTP server is used for each mail identity.

Like I mentioned before, this earlier thread on SBC DSL outgoing (SMTP) server issues might also be helpful to look through:

Thanks for all the great info Alice! You explained it much better than I could have! Piloto3524, hang in there! I just wanted to say I have SBC/Yahoo! DSL, use Netscape 7.1 mail with both an SBC/Yahoo! email account and a Netscape webmail account and they both work fine.

Hi Jeffredo,

Thanks for confirming the information I gave to piloto3524

It's nice to have an SBC Yahoo person here who knows what's happening :)

AArrgh to AH HA!

Postby piloto3524 » Fri 12 Mar, 2004 7:49 pm

Well I got back into this thing with SBC. Today I dumped everything in my computer that had to do with Netscape. I did so because SBC Yahoo sent me a comfirmation transition email and at the very bottom in tiny little letters there was a link that gave specific steps to follow for setting up Netscape 6.2 email. It doesn't say I can use 7.1 and it doesn't say I can use 4.7, and it doesn't say I can use 6.2.3, etc. So I went to SillyDogs archive and downloaded the exact one they say - 6.2. Did all the steps, which by the way, were the same as I have been using all along. The only thing I stumbled on was the SMTP Advanced settings page. They do not mention this at all. BUT, having read the postings here it seemed that I read somewhere that I could only have one SMTP in that little box. Well there were about 5 or 6. Where they came from I don't know. I wipe them all out except the one that was recommended last week; "smtp.domain.yahoo.com". All of a sudden I could send and receive emails with no problem. Now I wonder if that was my problem all along? Seems impossible after spending hours on the phone with the guys in India and San Francisco; But I don't remember any of them telling me to check that Advanced box. I am very tempted to uninstall 6.2 and reinstall 7.1 to see if I can make it work. I kinda of like that Netscape Radio button, especially ZZtop. Remember I unistalled everything that had to do with Netscape. Somehow when I reinstalled NS6.2 all of my email addresses, that I thought were long gone, were there but not my saved emails from when all of this migration stuff started. Is there a stand alone radio button?

I am amazed that they gave instructions about 6.2, when it has been given up by almost everyone. Other people will tell that it is because it is buggy, when it was really primitive. The only problem is that there is no good way to export the address book.
There can be as many SMTPs that you want, and the way to select them is insane. Who would ever check a button which says Advanced? In Moz1.6 it was moved to a more reasonable location, like server settings of the account, but still Advanced.
There is a standalone Radio@NetscapePlus, available from the Netscape website. And, have posted about a new Radio@NetscapePlus beta.

I would say so

Go for it!

I'm not sure if this applies to all versions of Netscape 6 but there is an uninstall bug that leaves image files still linked to netscp6 UNLESS you first UNcheck the preferences that make Netscape 6 the default.
See http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=64727 and
http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns6newjpegpatch.html

I would suggest you do the following before Uninstalling Netscape 6.2 and installing Netscape 7.1 (from my notes)

1) Open a Netscape 6 window.
2) Click on the Edit menu and select "Preferences"
3) In the Preferences screen, click on the triangle next to "Advanced" to
display the Advanced subcatergories.
4) Click on "Desktop Integration"
5) In the Desktop Integration screen, clear the checkboxes of each file type, to restore to its previous state.
6) Click on the OK button

I would then uninstall Netscape 6.2 using the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

Next, remove any leftover Netscape6 or Netscape 7 program folders, for example, C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape

Also remove any leftover C:\Progam Files\common files\mozilla.org\GRE folder, if it exists, then install Netscape 7.1
