Those were the directions for Netscape 6 I found in the newsgroups and in help pages like http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns6newjpegpatch.html

In case the preference screens were changed in Netscape 6.2, also look in:
Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System
(that's where the filetype association checkboxes are located in more recent Netscape and Mozilla versions) .

With the screen shot from Ramona and the tip from Alice I found it. It is called "system" in 6.2. I will give it a try and let you all know. Thank you
