Activation

Postby Peter6218 » Wed 23 Feb, 2005 4:29 pm

Due to a total hard drive crash I've had to re-install Netscape 6.

Now every time I start the Computer I get this message.

"Couldn't reach activation"

How do I get rid of this ??

It that computer's (Windows') activation OR Netscape's activation?

It'll most likely be Netscape 6.2.3 trying to connect to the now defunct activation.netscape.com,
to process the Netscape browser registration usually prompted for after installation of Netscape.

The best thing to do would be to either upgrade to Netscape 7.2, or Mozilla Firefox instead.

To disable the obsolete "activation" feature of Netscape 6.2.x, you can follow one of the three procedures listed in this SillyDog701 Knowledge Base article.

Thanks

And, now, consider downloading a newer Netscape, uninstall the old one, and install the new one. Your mail and stuff will not be affected, although I havve no idea the transition will be smooth. The old version is very different from the new one.

I prefer Ver 6, thanks.

I don't like the way ver 7 handles several functions including bookmarks. 6 is much simpler and works well. I had ver 7 running for a while and went back to 6.

Thanks anyway.

7 doesn't allow you to specify where the bookmark is to go when you create it. Pain in the ass

It doesn't do prefill forms nearly as nicely as 6. I do a lot of email of newspaper articles and the 6 method is far superior.

Want to see what ver 8 is like?

I use that for certain sites where I have style sheet problems. Not bad but not Gecko

Firefox is built on Gecko, and so is Netscape
