Active X for Browsers

Postby jsmooth » Tue 14 Dec, 2004 10:16 pm

Do all browsers use Active X or something similiar to view through their browser?

IE - uses Active X
Mozilla - uses something similiar to Active X

What about Netscape?
Opera?

Does netscape or Opera have an open source?

And so on and so on.

Thanks,

Netscape is a branded version of mozilla. Opera is all by itself, and is open source. As for Active X, it is frowned upon by many, and for good reason. I get warning about open an Active X driven file in AOL, but, still it is used. Just as Mozilla is open source, there add-ons which have been developed, and Active X plugins do exist, but have a narrow compatibility.
Netscape and Mozilla plugins can, probably be used interchangeably, but NS7.1 and 7.2 come with the plugins already included. Moz1.4.x and 1.7.x are Mozilla cousins of the two Netscapes.. I don't know about Opera, but it may work, as it uses Netscape plugins, but I am not sure, in this case.

I have a good article on installing ActiveX into non-microsoft browsers up at my website. Take a look at Alternative Browser ActiveX Integration

Thanks for the help.

When you say plugin for Netscape or Opera where can I find out more information about publishing a website with their Browser.

Here is a link that shows how to use Active X for Mozilla. Has this been done or can it even be done for other browsers like Netscape or Opera?

http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/iemozilla.asp

The above link is what I need to find for other browsers because I don't want to use IE browser :)

Thanks for links dluchini30, Fulvio.

Anymore help for me?

Jsmooth,

There is a LiveConnect (old Netscape plugin architecture) plugin available on the Mozilla ActiveX Project homepage that can be used with Opera. Unfortunately, I do not think that you can configure that plugin to tell it which controls to accept and which to reject; it should just accept all of them.

For some reason the link which I gave before is not working, but the home page of the link I was trying to give is working. Probably, using what Don said, and this, you may get what you want. It is working now, at least.

Don's Live connect link is from the same site.

But, it is a crazy thing. If you use the improper .dll file, you get an error message. Interestingly, I was getting the error with this browser which does not have the plugin.

Opera is not actually an open source product. It's a closed source, commercial product, which is pretty much
the exact opposite of Mozilla. Although now that Mozilla Firefox comes with it's own commercial style EULA,
is marketed towards the end users that Netscape browsers were aimed at, and is about to be promoted
in a huge two page advert to be published in the New York Times, it is slowly edging towards being
a fully fledged commercial product, albeit one built with openly available source code.

Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!
