Ad Blocking

Postby sic » Mon 15 Sep, 2003 6:12 am

I use a program called TweakXP that has and ad blocking feature. It blocks all of those annoying ads from servers such as doublclick etc. When I was using IE it was silent, but now that I have switched over to Netscape 7.1 (VERY happy with the switch) I do have a small annoying problem. Netscape gives me numerous Document Contains No Data messages when those ads are blocked (I suspect this is the reason).

Ideally, I would like to continue using the TweakXP ad blocker, because it has an extensive list of ad servers blocked, so I would like to know if there is a way to turn off that particular error message. If not, I have downloaded the ad-blocker xpi that adds a "block images from this server" option to the contextual menu, which works fine. The problem is you have to block all of the servers manually (or do you?). Is there a way to copy all of the servers in the TweakXP list to the Mozilla ad blocker xpi?

Thanks for any help...

I was looking at the Image Manager and it appears that from there you can only remove servers whose images are blocked, not add. :(

That woud be a nice option, copy and paste servers to block images in the image manager. Where do I send that request?

I hope you realise that by blocking ads you are jepodizing the future of your favourite websites.

I am not sure what kind of ads you are trying to block, and all of them?
Hartlandcat is quite correct that you are defeating the advertising from everyone. I will not tolerate popus or popunders, and I will enable the popup controls, accordingly, and I will not tolerate blinking ads.
There is this neat addon to Mozilla and Netscape, which will give you "Kill Flash" for the session. http://prefbar.mozdev.org
The prefbar is very useful, in other ways.

I block popups and popunders as well. However, website owners have to make money somehow, and they can do that by displaying banners on their pages. People shouldn't block banners as well.

I will block all blinking banners. They are very bothersome to me.
I am sure website owners wil survive under these conditions. I don't mind the banner, but I object to the blinking. And, Kill Flash will not affect other Images.

For others who may be interested in resolving this issue, I found a work around to my question.

I had added servers to block in my Hosts file (more on this: http://everythingisnt.com/hosts.html) which effectively blocked ads from known ad servers. This was done silently in IE, but in Netscape I would have to click on the annoying Document Contains no Data alert to finish downloading the page. Somewhat annoying.

So as a work around I deleted all servers from the Hosts file, thus allowing the ads back in. Then I downloaded the adblocker xpi for Mozilla (click here to install: ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/djgm-i/clubn ... locker.xpi). This plugin allows you to block images from selected servers via the contextual menu (there is a sticky on this topic). It's more labor intensive at first, but after a while you'll have most of the adservers blocked and you will not have the Document Contains no Data alert. :)

However, if you want to block the ads because you have a bandwith issue, you may have to use the Hosts file method as I suspect that using the Mozilla plugin still downloads the images, it just doesn't display them. :(

Does the adblocker.xpi you installed add additional preferences under Privacy&Security | Images? Seems that Netscape 7 and 7.1 don't give you all the Privacy&Security | Image preferences. The setting that allows you to block images from third-party servers ("accept images that come from the originating server only") may be useful in blocking images from adservers.

For what it's worth, Holger Metzger's site has a fix to restore, among other features, the "Full access to the Imageblocker". These missing features can be added to Netscape 7.0 AND to Netscape 7.01-7.02-7.1 using the Install links here:
http://www.holgermetzger.de/restore.html

I'm not sure if or how Holger's restore.xpi will interract with the adblocker.xpi you aleready installed, though.

It only adds a block or unblock images from this server to the right-click contextual menu and the Image Manager found under the Tools menu. This is much more useful than the block all images from third party servers because you can pick and choose which servers to block.

What does "full access" to the image blocker entail? If there are other aspects other than simply blocking or unblocking images from a server, I may try to install it.

The ad blocker is not a plugin, it merely adds a few lines of code to some files, which some people prefer to do manually. The instructions can be found under the "Enabling the Image blocker in Netscape" thread on this forum, which is stickyed.
