Address Book Default. Hey This Ain't Easy

Postby brad4221 » Thu 24 Apr, 2003 8:54 pm

When composing I click on addresses and by default pops up "Collected Addresses). I don't want that so I arrow to one of the private accounts I had imported from 4.7 and Outlook. How do I set one of these as default and/or delete the "collected addresses) from my computer?

As always any help will be appreciated.

Your personal and collected address books cannot be deleted, but you can delete the contents, and stop collecting from your preferences. I have always seen it opening into the Personal Address Book, by default, and I can't see how it can be changed. But, you surely can copy the addresses from one address book to another. It is not a good, nor bad address book, really.

brad4221,

Do you have a "Personal Address Book" listed in the display ?

Please post the "Address Book list" in the order displayed.

Can yo find your Profile Directory ?

Please post back and perhaps we can come up with a solution.

Thanks for your help. While composing a letter I cllick on addresses I get the address book window with "Look in - collected addresses" Since I don't use or save collected address, then I must use arrow to get the full list:
"Collected Addresses"
"pab" (Not "Personal Address Book" but "pab"
"Outlook Express Address Book"

I'm on XP so by profile directory you mean "setting folder" right? I can get there and I can open pref files but there has to be a line some where that I can set the default to "pab" and not "collected address". Ya think?

in XP your profiles are in:

C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt
NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
To see hidden files:
1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
2. Click the View tab
3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folder

Close all instances of NS, including Quick Launch.............

BACK UP YOUR PREFS.JS FILE

You should have several .mab files.
Do you have an abook.mab file?

If yes, delete the abook.mab file and then open NS.

On the main menu,(accross the top) select Window ->Address Book

in left pane you should have:

Personal Address Book
Collected Addresses
pab
Outlook Express Address Book

Personal Address Book should be empty.

Please verify if this is true and post back and we will try and continue in this direction.

(edit)
Just read fulvio's post, He is correct about the theme incompatibility. if you are using another theme, please change to NS Modern and see if that has any effetct.

I do not get to the address book the way you do, but there should be no difference. I click on the Address Book icon, select the address, and Compose, and I am off and running. The Personal Address Book is always on top, and, doing it your way, I can place the check mark, but it will always go back to Personal address book. I got five different profiles which I rotate using 7.02, and all of them look the same. Try to do it my way, and, if there is no Personal Address Book, you may have some problem.
Are you using any unusual theme? I know that incompatible themes cause
mail problems.

This is the process I recently did on my w95 / N7preview and it worked fine. Although I did not have the "pab" files, I had abook.mab in files and only had a empty "collected addresses" in my email view's. When deleting abook.mab, all addresses moved into "collected" and Netscape buildt a new "Personnel Address" folder. I then copied/pasted them into "Personnel Address Book". Everything works fine.

Update 4-26-03 1:32 am.
Upon checking my profile/salt folder...
I did NOT delete "abook.mab, I renamed it to abookOLD.mab
This activity is only done with NETSCAPE CLOSED

Again, thank you all for your valued imput. I've tried Mr. Davis's directions down to the line. No change.

Fulvio had a suggest that I tried. I was at Modern theme but I change to another and then back and no difference.

I'm still at Collected Addresses on the first line (default)
Then "pab"
In "Window - Address Book" I thought I could drag pab up and replace Col. Add. but NO. I've tried right clicking....nothing.

Does this sound like a reinstall might be the answer. I'll wait your reply.

I tried loading a new book from Outlook Express earlier and was looking at it just now and noticed the order they were in were alphabetical. Therefor, if this was the case it would make sence to create one call A Personal Address Book. Did it and it planted it's pretty little self right at the bottom. So that theory was shot to hell.

brad4221,

OK, on to suggestion #2.

I don't think a re-install is necessary at right now.

Sound like a corrupt profile and will require creating a NEW profile.

See Ramona's excellent page on creating new profile:
NEW PROFILE Link

First things first.

Export your GOOD address books "pab" and "Outlook Express Address Book " and your "Collected addresses" if there are any that you want to save. Export as LDIF files with the NAME that you want them to display when you re-import them:
e.g. If you want "pab" to display as "brad's addesses", export as "Brad's Addresses.ldif" (without quotes) and so on.

Follow Ramona's instructions for creating profile.

After this you should have a clean profile with everything in it's proper place. We can then see if things are as they should be and proceed accordingly.

Don't give up yet.

Well, I read what I would need to do to create a new profile and while that may be something I will do when I set this computer up for my wife and son to have a profile, I have been staring at the collected email address folder and I have decided that perhaps this is not such a bad name for a default folder. As long as I have that "collected addresses from sent" or "send" crap unchecked, let's face it, I can drag from any of my other address folder and put the names in there making it truely Collected Address. Does my point make sence?

Also I had been putting off updating to Net 7 from 4.79 because of the lack of Mail Notification that 4.7X had. You know the little green arrow in the right had corner task bar? I email Net support and got an answer that 6 & 7 did not have that and that I should stick with 4.7X. Even the Unoffical Netscape web page...I couldn't find information on it. There were post of people who, like myself, were looking for that feature in 6 & 7 but were told too that it wasn't there. In my fooling around I tried copying from 4.79 progam file called <nsnotify.exe> and pasting it in the quick start bar and letting it load when Windows start. This serves the purpose of what 4.7 did....notifing me of email even if I'm not in a mail program. I memtion this if anyone else post a question regarding this. A link to nsnotify.exe for downloads might be an option.

Again thanks for all the help and when I do the profile thing I'll let you know.

brad4221,,

OK Brad, now for the captjldd "chainsaw" approach.............

BACK-UP YOUR -- PREFS.JS-- file to --PREFS.JS.BRD --

In AddressBook window File -> New -> Address Book:

Creat new addressbook named "Brad's Addresses"

Select ALL Addresses in 'Collected Addresses" and drag and drop to "Brad's Addresses"

Close ALL NS

Open prefs.js in Notepad or other text editor.

FIND the following section (or something simular)

user_pref("ldap_2.servers.Bradsaddresses.description", "Brad's addresses");
user_pref("ldap_2.servers.Bradsaddresses.dirType", 2);
user_pref("ldap_2.servers.Bradsaddresses.filename", "abook-2.mab");
user_pref("ldap_2.servers.Bradsaddresses.isOffline", false);
user_pref("ldap_2.servers.Bradsaddresses.position", 7);

Edit position line (indicated in RED) to read:

user_pref("ldap_2.servers.Bradsaddresses.position", 1);

The 1 will force display to top of list.

Open NS and check Display order.

If this does not work, Close NS - re-stor prefs.js.brd to prefs.js and you will be back where we started. and I am stumped.

Post back and good luck.

Brad,
I do not see any comment to Dennis L. suggestion. Did you try it, or did I miss the reply comment?

Brad, if you did Mr.Davis's suggestions (with Netscape closed) which is the SAME thing I did (see my post, and Update Notice.. "renamed not deleted abook.mab") I don't know if doing it again is going to help. I was coming out of a "rename" profile situation that caused the "Personnel Address Book" to disappear. The abook.mab was still in file and text view appeared to be good. Mr. Davis's suggestion was the technique I used to have Netscape rebuild and provide a new "Personnel Address Book" back to the top of the list. Maybe / could be, you did not have Netscape closed, including Quick Launch closed (if active) when you deleted abook.mab?
