Address book disappeared

Postby Mari » Tue 23 Aug, 2005 4:44 pm

I have a user who has lost his address book. None of the mail files are missing, just the Personal Address Book. The Collected Addresses book is also still there. I do not even see a way to delete the Personal Address Book, so I am not sure how all of the addresses and lists could have been deleted. The abook.mab file is the current date and has no addresses in it.

The question is, could there be a backup of this file anywhere that Netscape would have created? I feel sure it cannot be recovered, but just want to make sure.

No, Netscape 7.xx doesn't automatically back up the personal address book. Are you looking in the correct Profile location for the abook.mab file, and in the correct "profilename"\xxxxxxx.SLT folder, if you have multiple profiles?

A typical Netscape 7.xx abook.mab file would be located here, in Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\12345678.SLT\abook.mab

Note that in Win2000 or WinXP the Application Data folder is hidden. To see hidden files:
1. On the Tools menu in My Computer or any Windows folder, click Folder Options.
2. Click the View tab.
3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.

To search for files in the Application Data folder, go to Start > Search. Under More Advanced Options select Search system folders, Search Hidden Files and folders and Search subfolders

Mari,
just to get things straight, although Alice gave all the info which I would have, and more. I would like to know where did the file disappear?
I believe that both Personal Address Book or the Collected book, cannot be rename or deleted. I don't use the Collected AB, which is a remnant of disgraceful earlier version where incoming addresses were stored. So, I have only one abook.mab file for the Personal AB, and several impab.mab (imported ABs). I had, in one case, an abook-1.mab AB, probably a remnant of the past. I could read the addresses, by right clicking on the icon, and opening with Notepad or Wordpad. I was a duplication of the abook.mab file, and, I did enough that it vanished. But, at least, I confess that I did something. Another, infrequently used profilr has a significant number of addresses in both Personal and Collected, but only one abook.mab file.
I, then, proceededed to delete the content of the Collected AB, and nothing changed on the hard drive. So, I, respectfully, retreat.
