Address Book in 7.0 Mail

Postby ipunty » Sat 19 Apr, 2003 5:35 pm

Hello all! Glad to be here and I hope to find some answers as I do have questions! My problem is that I am wondering if it is possible to rename address books. I accidently deleted one of the two, not "collected" but the personal one (forget name) and I know how to make an address book but not how to either name it or change the name of it. I even tried to reload all of 7.0 in hopes it would replace, but it didn't. Well, that ought to be enough for a start! Keep the answers simple as I am not to bright. Happy Easter and here's a cleaned up Easter Joke - Why does the Easter Bunny hide the eggs? Cause he doesn't want anybody to know he's bee doing it with the chickens! Thanks in advance, Bob

Once upon a time, I thought it was possible to rename the address books. But, I got nowhere when I tried. The Personal Address Book is the Default A.B., at least for me. And, I know that I could not delete it, although I sure made quite a few unintentional attempts.
Reloading the program does absolutely nothing, because it is a Profile related situation. If you do not have a Communicator to import it from, you may be out of luck. I have set up Eudora, which I use once in a while.
And, as a test, I imported its A.B., and along with I imported the Netscape Messenger A.B. Sorry that I can't help.

ipunty,

Just HOW did you delete the "Personal Address Book", As fulvio said, this can not USUALLY be deleted.

The "Personal Address Book" is the default addressbook created by NS.

The .slt file name is "abook.mab"

Usually located in:(assuming that you are running Win98 per your user agent string)

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\<profilename>\<somenumber>.slt\abook.mab

With ALL NS applications closed including Quick Launch, locate your profile .slt folder and re-name "abook.mab" to "xabook.mab" file

Restart NS.

The default address will be recreated and placed in the first position of the list.

Please POST back if this is not the case.

addy book

Postby ipunty » Mon 05 May, 2003 4:07 pm

My hat's off to the Capt! And thanks to you too, Fulvio! I followed yer suggestion Capt and sure enough the book came back. I found some oddities afterward, ran scandisk and the mozilla file came up twice as being misreported. I had scandisk fix and all still seems ok. I went back and the file has renamed itself back to "abook.mab"! Needless to say, the addy book is empty, any suggestions as how to fill it w/o copying each addy?
Again, THANKS!
Regards,
Bob

ipunty,

Not knowing exactly what you have, can only make an educated guess:

1. You now have a "Personal Address book" first on the list and it is empty.
(Y or N)

2. You now have an "abook.mab" in you .slt folder
(Y or N)

3. You have an "xabook.mab" file in your .slt folder
(Y or N)

If 1, 2 & 3 are yes, do the following with ALL Netscape programs closed:

Re-name "xabook.mab" to "abook.mab"

Open Netscape and see what you get.

Please post back.

Hey Capt!
I did what you said (see below) and the result was that I wasn't allowed to rename "xabook.mab" to "abook.mab" as "abook.mab" already existed. Next? Thanks again for all the help. Bob

Just let it overwrite the existing "abook.mab". or you can delete "abook.mab" first. the object is to replace "abook.mab" with "xabook.mab:

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Capt,
And thanks!

I did what you suggested and the result was that I once again lost the "Personal Addressbook." (pab) I went back and changed the new "abook.mab" back to "xabook.mab" and sure enough the pab came back but without entries. BTW, there is a file called "abook.nab" in that folder as well. I don't know if that means anything. Also, the "xabook.mab" was larger then the "abook.mab" and I thought it would work, but as I said, after deleting the "abook.mab" and renaming the "xabook.mab" the pab disappeared.
It sure is interesting!

ipunty,

Sorry that it didn't work. Looks like the "xabook.mab" is corrupted and that is what causes the problem. The "abook.nab" is an old Communicator addressbook. ( I Don't know what version). You might try and import it, but I do not know what the results would be.

Not being able to see exactly what you have, I am at a loss as to how to fix it. At least now we have an empty Personal Address Book. Unless someone else can come up with a suggestion it looks like you may have to re-renter address manually.

Again, sorry I could not help more.

and more again

Postby ipunty » Tue 06 May, 2003 3:18 pm

Hi Capt!
Well, it continues. I tried to import an address book from PocoMail which had been my email client before using N7.0. BTW, the previous vs was 4.07 and I think that's where that file came from. Anyway, when I did the import thing the pab disappeared again. The file was imported but the pab disappeared. What appeared was simply called addressbook. Prolly how I lost it in the first place. Frankly, I think I can live with this the only bummer is that because it is 1st, default I have to go to another addybook to do my emails since pab is empty.
If I find out anything new I'll post. Again, thanks for the help. I am sure I will have more questions, you are great!

Bob

ipunty,

Like I said, don't know exactly what you have.

If you have a "default" (first on the list) address book.
And it is empty.

and you have other addressbooks with entries in them.

You should be able to "Drag and Drop" entries to the empty book.

(Drag and Drop)

Open addressbook with entries that you want to copy from

Select entries - (in RIGHT panel) - HOLD down left mouse button.

Drag to left panel and drop them in the addressbook that you want to copy to.

Thats about all I can suggest.

Good luck
