Adobe Acrobat files not viewed in NS, Moz. FF

Postby Fulvio » Mon 31 Jan, 2005 1:38 pm

I clearly remember being able to get .pdf files in the browser (e.g.: irs.gov), but not this year. I have very few .pdf files so I am not 100% sure that it is a problem throughout, but at the IRS site, I get a nice blank page when I try to open such files from irs.gov. Example: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p15t.pdf

Fulvio,

I'm using an older Version of Acrobat Reader: 5.1.0.2002091700. I had no problem accessing the page your referenced. What Version of the Reader do you use?

I guess that there is problem with upgrading anything. I am using 7.0. I think that it would working when I first installed, but I think I had a 6.x installed in another directory. I will uninstall 7.0, and then reinstall.

I did something very simple. I went to the Control Panel|Add/Remove| selected Adobe Acrobat reader|Change to repair. and it worked.
Something must have gotten messed up.

I installed Adobe Reader 7 this morning, Fulvio, after reading up on it. I left Adobe Reader 5.05 still installed, since I read some newsgroup posts that some older PDF files may not open in Adobe Reader 7.0.

I had no problems at all viewing PDF files in the browser, using a very tiny PDF file from this link,
http://www.sanface.com/pdf/test.pdf

I also tested your link, http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p15t.pdf
and it also loaded in the browser, but took awhile to download on my dialup connection.

My about:plugins lists now show Adobe Acrobat Plug-In Version 7.00 for Netscape. Here are my install notes, fwiw:

[tt]02-01-05 Disabled Acrobat Reader 5.05 plugins by opening Acrobat 5.05 and UNchecking "Display PDF in Browser" but that didn't work (plugins still used in Mozilla and Firefox) so I ended up RENAMING the two copies of nppdf32.dll in
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Plugins
and C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat5.0\Reader\Browser, to Xnppdf32.dl.

Then I disabled eTrust AV and installed Acrobat Reader 7.0 which placed NEW copies of nppdf32.dll in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Plugins and in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\Browser , PLUS, new nppdf32.dll copies were also placed in Mozilla Firefox Netscape and Netscape 7.2 Plugin folders. Also, a Adobe Reader Speed Launch shortcut was placed in the "all users" startup folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup). I'll move the shortcut later to my "Startup-NOT folder", since I dislike automatic startups.

I started Adobe Reader 7.0 from the Start Programs shortcut, accepted the licence agreement and went through the preferences and turned off the automatic updates options in Startup and Updates.[/tt]

Alice,
I did nothing with the .dll file. I can explain my problem only as broken communication between the the .dll file and the Adobe Reader program.
I was thinking of doing something with the file in the plugins folder, but decided against it. I did not not think that reinstalling would do the job.

I did read something about the "Repair" option... "Detect and Repair" is also available from the Adobe Reader 7.0 Help menu.

Here's one place I saw that option mentioned:
http://www.ufaq.org/modules.php?name=Fo ... 8&start=15
Curt wrote:If you install Netscape or Mozilla AFTER you already have Adobe Reader installed open Adobe Reader, click "Help" on the toolbar, then click "Detect and Repair." This will install the Adobe Reader plug-in in the Netscape "plugins" Program Files folder. The repair files that the Adobe Reader 6.0 uses for this are in C:\Windows\Cache\Adobe Reader 6.0.1\ENUBIG. <snip>

I did not attempt to bring up the Adobe Reader program. I just wanted the files to open in my browser.

I opened the Adobe Reader program before trying to use the plugin to get the license agreement out of the way (plus, I wanted to go through the options.) I remembered reading something about needing to minimize the browser to see the license agreement. That's mentioned here for 6.0... don't know if it applies to 7.0 or not:
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/acrore ... win-issues
What known issues are there with the Acrobat plugin?

Using Adobe Reader 6.0 on Windows, you may encounter the following problems:<snip> * If you have not accepted the Adobe Reader EULA, you have to minimize your browser to see it.

By the way,

Even though the Adobe Reader 7.0 install did NOT place a copy of nppdf32.dll in my Netscape Browser (Prototype v2.0) plugins folder, about: plugins showed that the plugin was recognized and pdf files opened fine in the browser.

Same thing with my zipped version of Mozilla 1.6... NO copy of nppdf32.dll in the Plugins folder, but the plugin works. I have the preference plugin.expose_full_path set to "true" in about:config, in my Mozilla 1.6 profile, to show the full path to the plugin, and about-plugins in Moz1.6 shows:
File name: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\browser\nppdf32.dll
Adobe Acrobat Plug-In Version 7.00 for Netscape

So... plugin scanning is working, and picking up the nppdf32.dll plugin from C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\browser\ folder location, even though the actual nppdf32.dll file is not located in these two browsers' Plugins folders.

I have a copy of nppdf32.dll in all my browsers, i.e. NS7.2, Moz1.7.5 and FF1.0. And, it was not working. Then I did the Repair, and it worked. So, the .dll file must have not been communicating with Acrobat Reader. That is what I was trying to convey. Alice, what you see is not applicable to my system.

I wanted to tell you my experience with Adobe Reader 7.0 as a comparison, to show that it worked on my system, even though I didn't uninstall Adobe Reader 5.05 first... you said,
"...guess that there is problem with upgrading anything. I am using 7.0. I think that it would working when I first installed, but I think I had a 6.x installed in another directory..."
so that tells me that you still had Adobe Reader 6.0 installed when you installed 7.0? Whether or not my steps to disable the 5.05 plugin before I installed 7.0 helped, I can't say.

I found:
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/328233.html
PDF pages don't appear in web browser window (Acrobat 7.0, Adobe Reader 7.0)
which gives a number of possible fixes for the "blank page in web browser window" problem, and one of them is the "Repair" option you found. You're lucky the fix was so easy.

FWIW
win xp-home
Adobe 7.0 ( reader )
Moz 1.7.3- 1.7.5 - FF 1.0- NS 7.2

Whether or not Adobe shows in "about:plugins" and "plugins" folder seems to be dependent on how you have ADOBE 7.0 configured in the Adobe 7.0 program....

If you have selected "display PDF in browser" in Adobe preferences then there will be a copy of "nppdf32.dll" in ALL the plugins folders for Moz,NS and FF......Adobe copies it there from the Adobe 7.0 directory.

If you do not have "display PDF in browser" selected, it is not there and you will be asked what Moz should do with the file. Selecting "open with default application" will create a Helper Application and place it in the mimeTtypes.rdf file. (profile specific)

If you switch from "Display PDF in browser" to not display in browser, Adobe will remove the nppdf32.dll from the plugins folder.......and vice versa....

At least that is how I see it. But I could be wrong....

HTH

Works like that here as well, using the Adobe Reader 7.0 program's 's Edit > Preferences > Internet "Display PDF In Browser" option.

For whatever reason, that preference didn't always work in earlier versions, and you had to manually rename the nppdf32.dll file to disable the plugin, as I had to with Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.05.
