Adobe Air

What exactly does Adobe Air do and do we really "need" it? I expect it was installed when I recently re-installed Adobe Reader.

You don't really "need" it unless you have a program that specifically requires it. Adobe AIR is a runtime environment primarily targeted at Web development - think MS Silverlight or a Java applet running in a Web browser.
