It seems that one of the favorite pastimes of NS7.1 is to:
1.Lose the default status. I know that some other interloper is at fault.
2. I like to have my image files unchecked, because Netscape is not one of the best Image Managers. And, sure enough, it had the default status, as well as all the Images files checked, and I am never asked.
I never had this problem with 7.02!

You watching your registry.dat's Read Only status when you make those changes in your Preferences? I would make it writable first, make my changes, then re-set it to Read Only. I have no idea if this would have any effect.

BTW, I would guess that the registry.dat's uncontrollable growth should be solved in Netscape 7.1 since it is based on Mozilla 1.4.

I have had experienced the effect of Read Only on the Registry.
The Registry was not growing if set to Read Only, but for a Profile fanatic like me, it was deadly, because new Profiles could not be created, or moved, etc. The Registry.dat has been left untouched as Archive since Mar 1, 2003..
Anyway, I notice icons which don't belong, like NS icons with .gif files. What takes away the default status from Netscape? AOL, of course. But, still there is no reason to add image files wen I reset the default status.
This usurpation is not new. I liked to have Beonex as default, because it was coming right up, no profile manager in between, but, Mozilla were taking over almost any time. Now, having 7.1 default does not get me into it, I guess, because I have 7.02.
There is no way to tie a program with a program, for default.
These are small things, but they are discouraging from doing much testing. Too many distractions.

Neither my 7.1 or Mozilla 1.5b registry.dat files are read only, and only 2 KB each. However, if I open Mozilla, then the next time I open Netscape, I must reset my System settings, as Mozilla has taken over those settings.

I agree Fulvio, very frustrating! I had this problem with 7.02

Ramona,
I am glad to hear that I am not going crazy. However, there is a difference, in my case, AOL is taking over, and if this happens the System settings change. When Beonex was default, a later Mozilla was taking over, but the System settings did not change. Whaever is set for one browser, is set for the other.
