Ah.. help disaster has struck

Postby kellinjar » Mon 20 Jan, 2003 9:46 pm

here is the situation, I was playing Icewind Dale 2 and had netscape up in the back ground because I was looking up a complicated map.
The game hung I couldn't force it to close, had to hit the reset button..when the comp restarted it did its file scan before I could stop it and it truncated somenetscape file.. now my netscape is fried...everything is gone..book marks, address book, mail settings all my emails.
The files all still seem to be there (except for my bookmarks)
but how do I get them back?
when netscape starts it says it can't load the start up config file because of an illegal character (line 300) so I assume this is what was truncated...how can I fix this?
ack
I need my address book and saved emails :(

Start by looking at http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/index6.html
There is a lot of material there covering the creation of a new Profile, and retrieve your files. If you say that there are no bookmarks I think that you mean that they are not available, but they are still in the folders, so you will need a simple Copy/Paste. A bit more complicated is the Address Book business, but you are ok. The reason why all Netscape files are there is because you have, basically two parts of the program, the big one, i.e. Navigator, and the Profile, which covers Mail , Bookmarks and everything personal. That is the most vulnerable part, but tretrievable.
Good luck.

If your profile information is intact, then I would probably recommend that you attempt to uninstall, reboot, then attempt to re-install Netscape exactly as you had it set up before. Profile information (E-mail, bookmarks, etc.) is kept in a location separate (from the main program and is NOT removed by an uninstall. (Location info is given here.) You may wish to read Ramona's Clean Install and Custom Install information, although registry editing is usually not needed.

If profile info is corrupted, then you will be getting into try to copy profile files. This is what Fulvio is talking about.

Hi,
You can try to setup a new user profile and then import all of your bookmarks and other settings that you want to save in to the new profile. That should work.
That is wearde what happened to you I have never seen or heared about it before.
Thank You.

Hi,
if you use only 4.6, it is not likely to happen, but corrupted profiles or part of the profiles, seem more common in 6/7. And, you cannot really use an Import function, but use brute force, but gently Copy and then Paste, the files with Netscape closed.

Well I tried to reinstall over top of netscape.no luck..still said the start up configuration had the illegal character on it (using netscape 7.0 btw)
So I uninstalled..and then deleted all the root files in the profile directory and (leaving my mail files and copying out my address book)
installed 7.01 on and then set up my mail accountns again, the pasted my mail into the new directories..that was fine.
I pasted in my address book and got about half of my addresses.. so thats not a total loss..my bookmarks are history though.
As soon asI started up netscape after the crash and discovered the error, netscape seemed to write over top of my old bookmarks and create a new default bookmark file..so as far as I can tell those are gone... netscape seems to be working fine now...so its a matter of rebuilding my bookmarks and some of my address book
