aim and netscape aim together

Postby kah707 » Sun 27 Apr, 2003 1:06 am

When I click on check mail in aim, netscape navigator begins to open up, a white page appears and the message ""the aim hyperlink you've clicked on my require you to be online to work. Please sign on to aim first" with an OK button. When you press OK, netscape aim opens up and wants you to sign on, and kicks off aol aim, then goes to sign in page. This never happened before.

What should I do - turn off somehow the netscape aim?

TIA

Hi kah707

Keeping Netscape WEBmail Url view and Netscape WEBmail IMAP view is difficult and confusing discussion. But I'm getting more confused when you state "'check mail in aim"'. Is this a "different" email account (Web view/POP3/IMAP?) under the direct control of your previous ISP provider being AOL? Are you using a "stand alone AIM IM" program that has this phrase you click on to check mail? (which is a no-no) Or are you clicking on the "little envelope" in Netscape AIM/Nim, which opens up a view to Netscape email client views. In this subject area Kevin, you must be specific, detailed and overly repepitive to convey the correct information. AOL/AIM/Netscape/email has a dozen different interwined meanings. Unfortuantly only precise actions can provide a successful conclusion.

When I say aim, I mean "standalone aol im", and yes, there is a mailbox on "standalone aol im" which you can click to retrieve your mail @netscape.net.

When I click on this link (see above) I get the message: "the aim hyperlink you've clicked on my require you to be online to work. Please sign on to aim first" and there is an OK button. The funny thing is, I was already ON aim, the "standalone aol im", where I clicked on the retrieve mail link. When you press OK on the message, the "netscape aim" opens up and wants you to sign on, and kicks off the "standalone aol im", then goes to the sign in page. This never happened before. Usually, I go straight to the mail.

Is the answer to somehow disengage netscape aim, and if so, how is it done, I don't believe I saw anything in the preferences.

Hopefully, this clears things up a little.

TIA

As you are experiencing Kevin, AIM stand-alone and AIM/NIM Netscape are NOT compatabilty and will conflict. AIM/NIM is integrated very deep into Netscape 7's. You can load Navigator or email client (allowing you to browse or check POP3 and IMAP accounts) through this interface. It MUST be present to have Netscape WEBmail IMAP to function. With N7 and AIM/NIM closed, I would assume (?) AIM stand-alone would behave itself, just do not click the "Check Mail" phrase. BUT with N7's open and/or email open and/or you are using Netscape WEBmail IMAP, it could become very unpredictably. The buildt in AIM for Netscape functions very well and is always one click available.... or can be started at browser load... or at system Bootup. With so many choices, the stand-alone IM becomes obsolete.

Ok, but I have been told that the stand alone aim is upgraded more frequently, making the netscape aim outmoded quickly, since you have to wait for netscape version to upgrade. If that is the case, then wouldn't you want to keep the stand alone aim instead?

It depends on what you want to do with IM. The Netscape IM is essential to set up Netscape Webmail, and AOL Mail, if have it. The first step to ensure success is go go to the preferences of AIM, and select a password identical to that of NIM.
I, personally, detest IMs of any type, as much as phone calls, being intrusive, so I never use either NIM nor AIM. Just set up NIM not to launch from your NS preferences, and you should be able to use your standalone.
