AIM password changed Netscape screenname

Postby pointlobos3 » Thu 07 Apr, 2005 10:47 am

My son used my computer to log on with his AIM password. Since the AIM password is the same one the Netscape screen name (sign-on) would use, I fear it was changed. I can no longer sign on to Netscape using my own screen name. Did his AIM password change my screen name? (I tried signing him out, but nothing happens--I press "sign out" and get the same screen back.) How do I change the screen name back to what it was?

I cannot even visualize what is going on, but, may be because I have cable, and you may have dialup. AIM and Netscape are two separate programs, but if the AIM password is different from the IM password in Netscape, you may not be able to work with Netscape webmail. That would be the only problem, and it would occur if the other password was saved. So, have your son confess what he really did. If he save his AIM password, if could be removed from the Password manager.
But, I don't even want to go into details, since I don't understand what is your problem.
Are you using a Master password?

Netscape/AIM screen name

Postby pointlobos3 » Thu 07 Apr, 2005 12:21 pm

Thanks, Fulvio. I use broadband cable. Unless the new AIM password saved automatically, my son didn't save the password--he logged on to AIM, and changed the password from mine to his in order to log on. He logged off AIM, and then when I went to sign on to my Netscape homepage, his password was now where my old screen name should have been. It won't let me sing off that name, so I can't input my original screen name. I hope this clears up what is happening.

Let me tell you what my wife and I do. First of all neither one of us uses AIM, although we had AOL, and AIM is probably is installed. One of the things we had to do was to synchronize AIM and the Netscape IM(NIM). The only reason for the use of NIM is to set up Netscape or AOL Webmail. I still have Netscape Webmail set up. The two of us have four profiles set up, and we have shortcuts to access each profile. We don't use Master passwords, so we can access the browser part of Netscape normally. We may or may not have saved the passwords of the mail accounts. So, any Netscape is accessible, for the most part.
Now, I don't understand this part of your post:
I went to sign on to my Netscape homepage, his password was now where my old screen name should have been.

I am interpreting that you are using the Master Password, something which I have found unnecessary, and know nothing about. You can take a look at Edit|Preferences|Privacy|Master Password.
I want to make sure that you are asked for a password as you are trying to get into Netscape, or what. The situation is unfamiliar to me, so some details may be needed. But, I can't see how AIM may be involved.

Netscape and AIM screen name

Postby pointlobos3 » Thu 07 Apr, 2005 1:48 pm

I don't use AIM at all. But since it is installed, my son used it this once since his PC is being upgraded. The connection between AIM and Netscape on my computer is that I use Netscape as my homepage, and to sign on, which it occasionally, but not always, requires me to do (it's usually automatic), Netscape asks me to input a screen name and password, which has also been assigned to AIM and any other netpassword. So when my son used his password in place of my screen name (which would be used as my password for AIM if I used it), he changed the screen name that normally is automatically at the top of my homepage. I hope this is understandable! I guess I just need to know how AIM changes passwords, and that would change my screen name back.

AIM Netscape screen name

Postby pointlobos3 » Thu 07 Apr, 2005 2:09 pm

Fulvio, I fixed the problem. I scrolled to the screen name that was mine in AIM and it changed the AIM to my screen name, yet the screen name in my Netscape home page was still my son's. So I restarted the computer and sure enough, Netscape asked for a screen name and password when I tried to log on. I input my original screen name and everything is back to normal. Thanks for your help.

Glad that you fixed your problem. I am not sure, yet, what was your problem, but as I reconstruct it, it was not a Master password problem, but rather a website problem. I have never seen anything this, since I can come and go in and out of Netscape without asking me for a password, except if I want to access Webmail, or my set up of Netscape, which includes access to Webmail.
I also, have Tabs for critical sites, saved as Home group, rather than Home page, and, unless the site is changed, it does not matter if there are changes, because restarting the program reinstates the setting.
But, my total ignorance of AIM does not help.
