According to Massey University sports statistician Dr Hugh Morton, New Zealand were the best-performed team in the competition, based on his "adjustive ranking system",
According to his system, a team increases its points if it plays well and decreases its points if it does not.
This differs from the accumulative system, which awards four points for a win but which never goes down if a team fails to win.
Applying this system, using a well-known statistical procedure called multiple regression, to the results of all 48 World Cup matches, puts New Zealand at the top of the table with 112.05 points, Australia second at 104.86, England third on 104.14, followed by France at 93.83 and South Africa on 88.69.
