All digital sounds are distorted........

I am stuck for ideas. I can play cds and dvds without any problems, but all other sounds, ( mp3, online games, windows wav. sounds), are distorted or accelerated. Any ideas?????????

A while back, I had a problem where the WAV file that plays at Windows Start, would break-up as it played.
I installed a new sound card (Creative SoundBlaster Live! 5.1), and this eliminated the problem.
