Antivirus virus?

Postby Fulvio » Fri 04 Feb, 2011 1:25 pm

I have had Avast 5.x installed on my computer for the past four months, replacing AVG2011, which I had forever, because it started giving me problems. In over ten years, only one virus was found on my computer, and it was removed. Yesterday, my Avast daily scan found six files infected with Win32:Malware.gen. After hours of work, I had a clean computer. Last night, I did another scan, and everything was clean, still. This morning, immediately, I saw another virus, and it was the file which is needed to remove Avast (Add/Remove is not enough).
Now, I don't trust my AntiVirus, and I can't replace Avast. I contacted Avast, and let them know of my predicament.
I did a search, and found that this Malware goes back a long way. As it is true in all cases, there is software to detect the Malware, but it can't be removed, without buying some program.
Has anyone any idea how to get around this problem, without spending money?

Hey Fulvio-

I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials, and the Windows Firewall, and that's it, no problems.

PS: This virus is a cussed one, because it bounces around infecting file in different locations.
So far, it does not seem to have caused any damage, but after installing Malwarebytes AntiMalware, I found no fewer than eight bad registry keys, and one bad file doing a Quick Scan. The program let me delete the bad keys ided as Minibug Transporter, with the Adware being Adware.Minibug.
After restarting, and doing an Avast scan, it found a number of corrupted files, mostly in System Restore, which were deleted. A couple of other executable files, were also detected, and I deleted all of them.
Another Malwarebytes AntiMalware scan found nothing.
I don't have a clue how this virus/adware was picked up, as I am very conservative in the use of computer.
Notable were security updates of Opera and OpenOffice. Nothing wrong was found there. And, my wife spent some time in Facebook, mostly making comments. We, never, got any warning, until a computer scan scan was done. Since the System Restore seems to have been jeopardized, I have not tried any System Restore.
I will report if there is any other development.
It should be obvious to Richard that it is not the protection which I have, but something very sneaky.
It is curious, though, that the only reports I found for Win32:Malware.gen are from Avast users?

Confidence? About understanding what I mean?

Try a free scan with Norton. It is simply the best defense against malware and viruses with no exception.

And yes... I'm willing to pay for the security since it is the best. My attitude is: I spend as much at a restaurant in one night that I spend in a year for protection for three of my computers. My peace of mind and knowledge that I have the best security money can buy is well worth the few dollars I pay annually.

A lot of people believe in Norton. I don't. I tried it, and it caused me problems. And, the "free" scan is no exception. It cluttered my desktop with icons, and when I saw the size of the virus definitions (over 80 MB), it gave me no option to cancel. I was getting, only, options to buy.
Anyway, as an update, I will report that using a combination of my Avast and Antispyware software (like Super Antispyware), I was able to get a perfect scan. I don't know if it will be ok tomorrow, but, I finally feel more comfortable.
