AOL for MacOS X uses Netscape Gecko

Postby Antony » Fri 16 Aug, 2002 2:18 am

And it looks more Mac than IE for Mac.

AOL for Mac OSX is based on Mozilla 1.0.1.

The user agent string is:
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20020730 AOL/7.0

I have download it today, it is more faster than Netscape 7, the look of the browser is beautiful and more options than Mozilla or Nestscape I think.

The speed to load a site is very good, more than Explorer for iMac.

Email, i don't know....I us only the navigator.

 :D 8)
Netscape, I love It.

Mozilla 1.0.1

(whoops, I found this over a year old thread on Google, and I can't bear to see questions go unanswered)

Hmm, I wonder which HTML rendering engine will be embedded into the next version of AOL for Mac OS X?

Methinks they'll more than likely embed the KHTML based "AppleWebKit" engine used in Safari, since that
is now also the default HTML renderer in other Mac OS X applications, such as Apple Mail and OmniWeb.
Especially since AOL ditched the Netscape browser, and Mozilla became an independent organization.

Why can't AOL standardize, and use Gecko for every OS? They could even do an AOL for Linux! That would be nice to see. :tux:

The chances of an "AOL for Linux" are about as slim as Apple selling Mac OS X for x86 based PC's . . . !

Microsoft do not even standardise MSIE engines.
AOL can use MSIE/Mac engine for AOL for Mac, but not MSIE/Win engine for Windows builds, since MSIE/Mac is in fact a good and safe browser.

Looking at the top link, the toolbar does not look much different from the Windows AOL. And, I have been using AOL7.0 Gecko for long time. The Gecko engine was also used for Compuserve, owned by AOL.
Why did AOL not pursue the matter? There was an incredible opposition from users, and AOL could ill afford losing customers. AOL, really, wanted to do away with the IE engine, but the adherence to code killed the idea. Users did not want to have anything to do with a product which did not work as well.
I think that AOL hurried up too much (see Netscape6.0 being pushed), and everything went to pot. This should explain quite a few of the questions.

Why did the beta testers not like the Gecko version?

"It doesn't display my [closing-tagless] website correctly!"

You have to realize that anyone who is an AOL member can be a beta tester, the more the better. As I said, there were quite a few sites which did not comply to code, and this was unacceptable. As you well know, quite a few sites did make changes, but other sites never bothered. In fact, important sites like Yahoo will have nothing to do with Netscape greater than 4.8.
The saner ones suggested to have two versions of AOL, one with IE and the Gecko one. Essentially, Gecko would be beta forever.
In my opinion, adherence to code killed AOL Gecko, and AOL had no time to wait and see.
There may have been two or three beta testes who wanted to continue a Gecko testing, but AOL8, and then 9 went by without any Gecko.

Any chance an AOL 10 might have Gecko, or is it wishful thinking?
