Well, it's not really an Apple thing, when you think about it. I have an old Gateway SOLO 2500, the screen has a similar problem where if I don't have it at a 90-degree angle with the rest of the case it just falls backwards. This started a few years ago, shortly after Gateway discontinued the SOLO line. I called them up, even if my three-year warranty was long expired, since they were still offering extended SOLO support. I was expecting them to just repair it, but instead they told me to get a new laptop. At the time, the cheapest Gateway laptop was around $1100.
My point: at least Apple's willing to repair them.
BTW if you have this problem, it's actually quite easy if you have a roll of thick electrical tape. Just tape the hinges on the bottom of the screen to the screen back with a few layers. You might not be able to close the display anymore, and you'll always have it at the same angle away from you, but it works.
