Apple releases iPod shuffle

Postby Antony » Tue 11 Jan, 2005 4:25 pm

Smaller and lighter than a pack of gum, iPod shuffle works seamlessly with iTunes’ innovative AutoFill feature, which automatically selects songs from a user’s music library to fill up iPod shuffle with just one click. The most affordable iPod ever, iPod shuffle is available in two models: 512MB holding up to 120 songs for just US$99 (AU$149) and 1GB holding up to 240 songs for just US$149 (AU$229).

it weighs only 22 grams, plays up to 12 hours, and can be used as a USB hard disk storing device.

Apple also updates iTunes to version 4.7.1, adds iPod shuffle support

Apple has updated its iTunes software to version 4.7.1. The minor revision adds support for the new iPod Shuffle flash-based digital music player.

Although it's good to have a new addition to the iPod range that uses flash memory rather than a HDD, I must say
that I'm a bit disappointed by the fact that it has no display to show track listings, or which track is being played.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

It's designed to give you surprises, and a lot easier to carry.

iPod is a bit hard to carry, and you have to keep an eye on the gadget everybody wants to steal. With iPod shuffle, just hang on your neck.

I don't get what is that port that iPod lite is plugged into. I might as well get one...

Al,
It looks like it is pulgged to a USB port.

I agree. That is a major downside, to me. If I have 120-240 songs loaded onto the device, I'd like to know what songs are on and playing. That would be the only thing from keeping me from buying it. Alternatively, there is the Creative MuVo N200, an MP3 player of similar size to the iPod Shuffle, which is $99 USD for 256MB, $149 USD for 512MB, and $199 for 1GB models. The MuVo is more expensive than the iPod Shuffle, but it also has an LCD display screen.

It still doesn't look as good as a sleek iPod Shuffle, I found it that it doesn't quite fit in simplicty. Thanks for that info about the USB port

What's the point in buying an iPod if you can't install iTunes on your OS?

You could do that! But then again, I'd rather listen to music with an iPod. :P

The original iPod was designed to be simply to use. Now, the iPod shuffle is even simpler. I really don't see the point to have an LCD screen on that tiny streamline device.
iPod shuffle is not designed for choosing song, recording memos etc, it's designed with a new way of listening, "shuffle." You don't need to know (and shouldn't know) what would be played next. If you like, you can plays songs by the order you put.

Now, I found this iPod shuffle attractive to me for this reason:

iPod Clickwheel (20GB) is not that heavier than my mobile, and I wear tight jeans :-)

iPod shuffle, music to go

I did found something funny on the iPod Shuffle's home page.
"Do not eat iPod Shuffle"

Sheesh, what's the world coming to? Is somebody really going to mistake a $149 piece of hardware for an elegantly wrapped bar of food or something?
Maybe it has something to do with them mentioning a cupcake, who knows.
EDIT-- Wait, they're comparing it to a pack of gum in the first image.. But still, that's just a bit odd.

I'd say it's odd. Possibly Apple is frearing users may have both the iPod Suffle and a pack of gum in their pocket, and pull out the wrong item. It's a bit far out, but may happen.
